Haas Halo is similar but with more showy blooms. Nice pics, especially the 3rd one. Hee, hee, hee. I am surprised the critter did not run away from you!

luis..I've heard of Haas Halo..I'd love to have one..we have tame squirrels..they love you if you give them dry roasted unsalted peanuts..

I've had several volunteer hydrangeas but I can't determine if some are root suckers (several feet away from the mother plant or seedlings). I know one has to be a seedling as it is a paniculata and the only one close by is an oakleaf. Now I just want to see them bloom one of these years,

Oh those tree rats - HAHA! We replaced our deck a year after this and I told my wife - no bird feeders on the new deck! Reflections through the kitchen window capturing these acrobats.

hc..I have a love/hate relationship with "tree rats"..they can be cute and at the same time upsetting..they ruined 2 nice pots and almost all of my coleus this year..I had more destruction than in any year of the 15 years that I've been here..I want to stop the treats but I think they'll still be here..

I put sharp shards in any pot I start over or very large rocks to hold young plants in place. If the plant lives and puts roots down, it usually discourages squirrels and chipmunks from digging in my pots.

Here is an example of clay shards. I dug up the plants at my mother's in TN (I gave her both plants years ago so now I am getting some of it back). The giant reed died but the Canna Tropicana grew and bloomed this summer.

Decorative rock added to this new begonia pot

squirrels or chipmunks dug in this new pot and broke off one big stem. I had to put a huge stone in there to anchor it down.

I keep all broken pots in an area in the back for shards but they can cut your fingers too - not just keep squirrels at bay.

I do stones too..this was a mixed pot of hostas from my yard just planted this summer..they jumped in a few times but not much harm..the shards might deter a little better..I tried plastic forks..tooth picks..pinecones..blood meal..I've heard to use cayenne pepper but I haven't..I thought if they got it on their paws and in their eyes that it was cruel..I'm really sick of it though..maybe I'll try it..they tore up this begonia..I didn't take an after pic..it was sickening..

I have used pine cones too. And limbs and water hose gadgets.

I dug up some baby Japanese painted ferns in my mother's yard last April and put them in a big 18 inch pot. Needless to say the squirrels of chipmunks got in the pot and dug some of them out. I used a limb and water hose valves and manifold to stop the digging. Check out the progress.

I dug some more babies up from her yard this year

hc..that's hilarious..what an assortment of objects to deter squirrels..I was at a Walmart garden center and saw pinecones in the parking lot and on the ground by the trees..a lightbulb went off..I thought these would look pretty in the pots and might work..they didn't help as much as I hoped 🙁..it would be hideous but how about tack strips like for carpet?..

I love all ferns..I have some Japanese painted ferns too..I wish mine had seedlings..they're pretty but not that lush..you have such a green thumb..you can propagate anything..🌿

I have seen spikes for squirrels, birds nailed on fences, railings, roofs, etc. They look dangerous! I wonder how they nail them on.

I didn't know there was such a product!..they do look dangerous..and ugly!..I was half joking about tack strips 😂..it's so aggravating when you see plants destroyed at that moment you're willing to do just about anything..

I have seen these products too and wondered if the owners were actually using them to prevent people/burglars from easily jumping some fences.

luis..Lol..those spikes would be a hassle for criminals!

In Aruba, they use cactus as hedges against the wild donkeys on the island.

We had Mahonia on one side of the house for years until I cut them down this year. We didn't plant them for burglars but for their winter blooms, grape like berries, and interesting foliage but they do create a lot of seedlings.

Here is a good deterrent - Hawthorn if planted in the right location.

I've had this nasty plant..greenbriar..smilax something?..I ripped it out..I guess I should've put my pots next to it Lol..

Yeah, I hate saw briars (green or cat briar/brier). They always come up in shrubs it seems like that makes it hard to eradicate.

    In my double file viburnums

    and flowering quince bush

    Blackberry vines are notorious too.

mine was in a small tree of some sort (lindera I think)..I was wearing gloves and would cut small pieces of it and drop it in a plastic grocery bag to throw away..I didn't want it in the compost bin..

Why not in the compost bin? If no seeds then no problem...

I hate thorns..I have a plenty of organic matter so I tossed it..I also throw out stinging nettle and poison ivy when I dig it out..
