Help appreciated on kitchen remodel!

We are remodeling our small 1950 kitchen. Maple cabinets on the side and top of refrigerator (see left side of photo -- cabinets on top of frig not shown), two 30 inch maple shelves on adjoining wall, and white cabinets beneath window and along opposite wall. Window is being replaced with a french casement, door is being replaced with 3/4 lite white door, and hardwood flooring is being laid. No cabinets are planned for left side of window and the counter top is soapstone.

I would very much appreciate advice on:

1. Should the right corner cabinet be in maple or in white?

2. Is the tile pictured above a good choice even though it doesn't exactly match cabinets?

3. Should I put 18 inch maple shelves on the wall left of the window? Or hang artwork? Compared to the 30 inch shelves on the other wall, will 18" look too small?

4. Antique brass or oil rubbed bronze hardware?

Thank you so much for your help!
