Is it wood burning or gas? I don’t get the build in thing on the side. Was it supposed to be for firewood? And is the wall paint as yellow as it appears in the posted photo?

What will your future decor be like? What is your style preference? These will heavily influence what should be done to the fireplace. As freedomplace1 said - it's a nice enough fireplace (but a bit dated).

The decor will lean more contemporary and I have seen the swiss coffee paint brought up as a good option and it is that yellow in person! I was thinking maybe to update the tile? The fan/fixture is a great idea!

So the surround looks like granite. That would be kind of expensive and messy to replace. I don’t think the bright white mantel is working with it. But what color to paint it? Black would look great with the stone but I don’t know if it would work with the rest of the room

Change to gas, maybe use glass or fire rocks instead of the traditional gas logs. The fireplace is beautiful and there are so many other things to spend your $ on with a new house. It is easy to change the granite tile to another granite or slate tile - but it is a bit pricey $ to do so. We removed the mantle and had one sheet of solid granite - no tile - we ended up just putting just top of mantle back minus the legs - for Christmas stocking lol. Our trim on the fireplace doors was shiny gold but we just repainted the trim with Tremclad brushed nickle. Personally the only thing I would change with your fireplace is the butt ugly granite choice - baltic brown (?) ugh!

I'm thinking the room will be a white/off white (still warm like the swiss coffee paint). What colors/style granite tile would go with that, Terrie? The flooring will likely stay for now, but it will eventually be a lighter wood.

Marble or something that looks like marble. Light whitish background color. Maybe you should also get the fireplace inspected to make sure everything is in working order. They will also be helpful in considering what materials are good for heat and not staining from soot. I love my natural gas. In is worth every penny

Absolute black granite fireplace facing with new Custom Fireplace Doors that match your new Fanimation Custom Wrap ceiling fan. Toned down the yellowish paint and grayed out the sofa. Didn't feel like spending the time to change that not so contemporary coffee table.
