main bathroom redo

last modified: 6 years ago

I am doing a small redo due to finances. Tub and toilet are biscuit or almond? I did my floor last year and am keeping my oak cabinet that has matching triple medicine cabinets. Bought an oil rubbed Copper bronze skirted vessel sink with oil rubbed bronze single faucet. I don’t know what color granite or quartz countertop to buy and would appreciate any color countertop you could suggest. Many thanks!!!!

Pictures of the existing bath would be helpful.

Thank you. I do have a picture of my existing bathroom under my post.

What are you looking to do with this space? What do you want to change?

I think a plain white quarts countertop

You should choose something that works with your floor tile, or else that will stick out as too white.

MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO TOOK THE TIME TO HELP ME—I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT! I’m off to the granite/quartz yard where they have slabs/leftover pieces and am taking my oil rubbed bronze sink to be able to see what it looks like in the light—if it doesn’t rain—Ha! Good thing the sink isn’t heavy but I am determined to hopefully find something that will compliment my small, main bathroom after it has been that way for MANY years! I’ve been here 15 years and am still trying to do projects to make it ”my own”. I checked out the website that Peke suggested and am truly grateful—I learned a lot, took screenshots, took into my bathroom to try and get an idea how each color would look, put color choices next to my sink, so I have been busy to say the least but well worth my time.

I’ll do an update and post some pics and hopefully get some feedback. Also am going to ask LOTS of questions about my choices as far as hardness, staining, water absorption, etc. and hopefully I’ll get truthful answers.

    Wish me luck!!

I made a decision on the color of granite and wanted to share.

It’s called Solarius. I brought a sample home, laid it on the floor tile, on the tub surround and next to my cupboard and I think it compliments the almond color and oak vanity and the oil-rubbed bronze copper skirted sink. Since it’s going to be cut from a left-over piece of granite, it’ll cost me $35/sq. ft. I asked the salesperson if I could place the pattern of the countertop once they measure and make the template where I’d like it to be cut and she said “yes”!

    Any comments would be appreciated.

Nice! You saved a lot of money! Mine is $25.00 s.f. plus $70.00 per hole, so my faucets will be one hole faucets. Too expensive with three holes and I don't want to dry off/clean three.

Pick another darker color from the slab for artwork, towels, rugs, etc.

with ORB, since its similar to matte black.. I would go with a white stone.. a dark counter top might be a bit too much.

I forgot to ask if there‘s a charge for drain and faucet holes. I’ll definitely ask them; thank you for mentioning that! I was thinking the same as a darker color for accessorizing—thank you Peke!

I found it. There are thousands of posts in the 6 pages. This is page six. At the bottom of Karen's first post you will see links to pages 1-5 to read before page six.

We filled one up and someone would start another. Well worth reading. Some show stones, but the important parts are about testing stones and written by Karin_Mt. Others were important too, but Karen's posts will explain a lot.

I think they charge extra for different edges too, so ask them to show you the edge they use.

I brought home a piece of white stone with a very fine brown vein widely dispersed on the stone and it didn’t look right with the almond toilet/tub. I initially wanted white but didn’t know how it would look with the almond. I am confused now about the Solarius granite. I definitely don’t want the countertop to be too much. It really helps with suggestions and I don’t want to make a mistake.

In the showroom they had a ”lazy susan” with all the different edges that you could choose. I decided to go with a “pencil” edge as I want my countertop to be as large as possible without having a straight edge since my existing countertop is 19” x 31”. Having a small bathroom makes it difficult to try and have everything compliment each other without being too matchy-matchy. I found out they don’t charge extra for cutting the holes. I asked many questions about the differences in stones: scratch test, acidity, etc. and she was very helpful. I read a lot of Karin’s posts and they were all very helpful. There is a lot to learn about buying the right stone for your project. I am confused, to say the least, about choosing the right color. They are coming out next week to measure so I will go back to the yard and showroom to look again at all the choices. Thank you, again, Peke, for the stone links! I knew this would be a challenge and don’t want to make a wrong decision as this bathroom remodel is something I’ll have to live with.

I am sure you will likely be whatever stone you choose. Post the finished picture when you are finished. Most stoneyards do not know as much as Karen does. Many of them give wrong information. Some will sell marble and say it is quartzite which is a lot more expensive.

You may want to have your cabinet cut down before adding a vessel sink, or it will be awfully high to use everyday! They're usually put on cabinets that are 4-6 inches shorter than standard...

Not the word likely...I meant lovely.

Haha—I knew what you meant but thank you for clarifying it.

Susan: ACM brings out an important point. Your vessel sink and granite will bring the sink up much higher than your current one. Take measurements of the granite and the highest point of your vessel sink, add together and see where it lands above your vanity. You need to cut down the vanity to accommodate human beings and anything above it. Your new combination will be very ice. The granite + vessel sink will be the star of the room. (Don’t forget to ask about hole cut costs for your faucet.)

    Hi RedRyder,

Thank you for responding to my bathroom redo. My triple oak medicine cabinets are way above the sink and the new oil rubbed bronze skirted copper vessel sink will only 2” above the granite countertop. I am still second guessing myself after being at the granite yard/showroom deciding if the Solarius will not be too overpowering in the bathroom. I can’t remove the existing toilet or tub and want to make sure the new sink and countertop compliment them. Even though this is a small project after seeing and reading other redos, it will have to be there for the long haul.

Happy Halloween 🎃 👻 to all!

Try putting white paper on the walls to cover the dark wall paint. Computer monitors always show different colors, so it is a guess for us. You know the light in your bathroom. Plus, phones change the colors when you take pictures.

Good morning! My small bathroom project is done!

As you can see I changed the granite and really glad I did! It has white, creams and darker shades to compliment my other oil rubbed bronze fixtures.

Great! I bet you are glad it is done! Love that sink!
