What to replace rhododendons with?

Hi,

Our landscaper installed three rhododendron in the back row of our garden that we would like to replace with another perennial or evergreen (we have a dog and the rhodo leaves are very poisonous). What would you recommend we replace them with? The goal would be to cover the porch cement edge but not put anything that will grow too high. I was debating a row of yew or boxwood to form a hedge we can trim to height? Garden is south facing (mostly sun) and we live in climate 5a.
