Acetone is clear and makes a fine PVC primer. Primer manufacturers add purple color so inspectors can immediately identify its use.

We use Weld On products and they make clear, primer. Primers are made from methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). It's purpose is to clean the pipe surface and also prep it by slightly softening it to accept the glue to be used to provide a proper bond.

We use a blue colored glue and clear primer for underground pipe connections and clear glue and primer for all the equipment connections. It results in a clean look.

House plumbers must use a purple primer on household PVC piping to indicate they did in fact prime the pipe prior to gluing for inspection purposes. Sometimes it can look messy as the purple primer seems to get everywhere.

You won't be able to tell if your piping had primer applied prior to gluing.
