I have just deep cleaned my kitchen cabinets using vinegar to remove grease etc. I removed the hardware as I will be replacing it anyway. Where the handles were, there is a slight bit if wear on the cabinets. I lightly sanded & now I need to touch up with stain. I was considering applying a gel stain over the entire surface to darken them overall. Still undecided on that. I also heard of people using briwax but I am skeptical because this is a kitchen aka utility room & since you can't top coat the cabs after applying wax, I worry about cleaning the cabinets periodically.

If I go the darken them route, what is a good gel stain. And finally, what is the best low sheen clear coat I can apply to all of the cabinets? I prefer water based because it is easier to clean up.
