Master bed/bath layout dilemma!! Please help!

Hello fellow community :)

We are designing our home and having a hard time deciding which master bed/bath layout to go with. I know it‘s a personal preference and each has its pros/cons.

option 1 main concerns is having having to pass the master entry to get to bathroom and whether or not you could hear the shower running since it’s sharing the living room wall. Also, would it be awkward to walk past the closets to the bedroom?

option 2 main concern: the doors swing open directly facing the living room (less privacy) and the closet is super long and not enough natural light with the small window inside. (I’m big on that)

Any help would be much appreciated!

That’s a great idea @RappArchitecture didn't think of that! Since we don’t need that much closet we can have the entry where the linen closet is (move the linen over to the right ) and still have a separate closet door and entry to bathroom. Thank you!!

I like #1 way better. It's less convoluted and I'd want my own closet if possible. I have a shower next to my great room, much like in your layout, and you can't hear it at all. And we have water lines running in that way, and thin walls. I pass my closet on the way into my bedroom. I've never thought anything of it.

I'm all about natural light too.. but have you considered whether you'll need to protect your clothes from fading?

Are you sure you want double doors to both the bedroom and the bathroom? They are a bother when you have something in one hand, and there is no convenient place for a light switch.

Does the study have its own porch and door because clients will be coming in? If so, reconsider the windows into the closet, if you go with A.

@jslazart good point about the close fading...the hers closet is facing east and his is facing north with the covered porch so not any direct sunlight for most of the day. Would diffuse light still cause fading?

@bpath there won’t be any clients or anything...we could also put doors from the master out to the porch too...hmm didn't think about that option either 🤔

I like Option 1. If one of you needs to get up early, then the bathroom is much more private. and if you can have two closets, that would be my preference, too.

I wouldn’t make double doors from the living room to the bedroom though - those never close right, don’t lock and generally aren’t as private. As long as you close the door, it shouldn’t be an issue to walk from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Both are nice. I prefer option 1. I like the idea of being able to have a spouse get out of bed and not have to come back through the bedroom. I also think that it is nice having quicker access during the day to the master bathroom rather than having to use the powder room! And for sure, I prefer separate master closets. :)

I would consider making a little nook as you come in (where bathroom linen and hers dresser space is. Put a nice furniture chest piece there with some decor. :) You could flip the bathroom linen to be accessible from the toilet closet.

I don't care for the powder room on option 1. You could move the shower up in the space that option 2 uses for part of the closet with the safe. Then move some other stuff around or add something extra...
