updated maple dressers

last modified: 5 years ago

I've had these dressers since I was a child. I wanted to coordinate them with my parents four poster cherry bed for my guestroom. They were worn and dated but solid maple. We painted the bottoms and stained the tops. We also replaced the hardware and the mirror.

    Are the knobs removable???
I’d sand it down and restain it with less of a sheen

And then redo the knobs with pretty hardware

I just refinished and replaced hardware.

They have a satin finish. That's just the reflection of the light.

Beautiful job! And so much work! I have a maple dresser that I inherited from my grandmother, and have often thought about painting it white. It's nothing special as far as the wood goes. But I have painted wood furniture before so I know how much work it is. Just goes to show you the value of solid wood furniture, it can be refashioned in so many ways. Yours looks great with the room and cool way to update something of value without spending a lot of money . . . but I imagine you did spend some time on the project. Well done!

    I pinkmountain,
Thank you so much for your kind words! It was a labor of love. The dressers been in a spare bedroom since we sold my parents home after my mom died 10 years ago. My husband was adamant about not wanting to paint them so this was our compromise. I wanted to give them a fresh updated look while still keeping the warmth of the wood grain that my husband prefers.

Fantastic!!! God Furniture is crazy expensive - usually much better to redo a quality old piece.

Nice job. I think they coordinate well. I love a pencil post bed because it doesn’t require a large room and to me is a classic.

Those look fabulous, great job! Wow — wonderful transformation, and the mirror looks great with the dresser. You’ve updated a classic, but kept the vintage feel and charm.

Anne, I love pencil post beds, too. I’ve had mine since ‘93 and never tire of the look.

Thank you so much Jinx! That’s exactly what I was hoping to do! This was our first project this big. Maple is a beautiful wood but very hard to stain because it’s so hard it doesn’t absorb stain evenly. My husband was adamant about not wanting to paint them and I wanted to give them a fresh updated look so this was our compromise.

I meant to write GOOD furniture, not God. Hope no one was offended.

No offense taken. I don’t know why they removed the edit button on this app.
