Waterproofing a Shower Window

Getting pretty close to completing a bathroom renovation. We relocated a tub/shower near an existing window and our contractor laid down some hardiebacker and tiled around it. It doesn’t look like it’s anywhere near waterproof to me and I’m concerned of water intrusion when we start using this thing. Any ideas on how this should be properly sealed up?

Too late now, that needed to be detailed on the front end. My concern would be if he put no thought into the window what thought did he pout into the balance of the shower?

More importantly, I'd make sure the glass in that window is tempered.

It's not possible to determine from the photos whether the joint between the window and the wall is or is not properly sealed. All of the waterproofing is done before the tile is installed and the tile then hides whatever was done.

from a tilers standpoint thats a very high risk tile choice for this window cavity. The reality, its not as simple as tying into the windows flange inside the home if the exterior is not ALSO fully wrapped shingle lapped and water proof with pitched drainge as well.

here it takes 2 to tango, if a GC asked me to do the job id pass unless i can see the exterior flashings. the simple twist of a wet piece of lumber and game over

    A very good point.

It's not hard to effectively seal a window in a shower, but it has to be done right with great attention to detail for it to last decades without an issue.

Thanks for all the great insight super helpful. Here is a shot of the window before they tiled over it. I believe they did put in a membrane (The black material under the wonderboard). However, you all probably know better than me. So is the idea that we should replace the window at this point, put the right waterproofing in place and re-tile?

That is an unfortunate mess of an install, has that craigslist 1/2 price handyman look to it. You WANTED a tile professional that would connect a bonded membrane to the actual window flange , nothing less will do, especially for a stone install.

All a bit late to correct any of this properly now.

    Hire wisely America.

What did they put over the cement board for waterproofing? As I mentioned earlier the horse is out of the barn, all you can do now is caulk and hope. Hopefully they waterproofed the cement board correctly or you will have an opportunity to redo the window in fairly short order.

If the tiler wrapped a membrane around the jamb and tool up to the window, then you should be OK -- not the best approach, it it should work. It would have been better to cut the durock up to the edge, then wrap the edge with a membrane

More of a concern is the window glass. The picture is not the best, but I do not seen any indication that the glass is tempered. If it is not. it does not meet code or common sense. Take the sashes out and to a glass shop. Have the glass replaced with tempered -- at least the bottom sash -- but better both sashes.

I also can't tell if the stool is sloped into the tub. It does not need to be much of a slope, but there should be some slope.

This bathroom remodeling stuff is a system and has to be designed comprehensively, not "What do I do now?"

Impossible to say with this one, but I'm not optimistic.

@Joseph Corlett, LLC I agree, however I hired "experts" and was hoping that they would bring their experience to the table since this isn't my area of expertise. Instead im finding myself checking their work and finding out they arent doing it correctly as seen in this post.

@StarCraft Custom Builders thanks for all your great insights. I think at this point Im going to put in a new smaller vinyl window with tempered glass and have them redo the waterproofing and some of the tile work. The stool is sloped and so is our shampoo box but they didn't do that for the window sill. Another indication that this work isnt done correctly.
