What are the sizes of the pictures you are considering? And, what is the width of the buffet, and the height from the buffet to the curtain rod?

Hi! My buffet is 60
Inches wide. The height from the buffet to my curtain rod is 54” and from my buffet to the top mounding above my window is 43.
The sizes for the vertical painting- 30x40 or 36x48, and for horizontal option - 40x 30 or 48x36.

I think your best option would be one of the horizontal pieces...if you have time, it would be great if you could tape off each painting size and post an image.

Are there certain rules for how big small artwork should be?

From Ballard: The general rule of thumb we use is that artwork should be about 75% of the width of the furniture, and this applies to a single piece of art or a grouping.

One of my pet peeves is art that is taller than nearby window frames. It can look awkward. Take that into consideration and tape off the art sizes with blue painter's tape to help you decide.

Horizontal, just a bit smaller than the current mirror it’s centered over the buffet. Good luck.

Why?

Sconces might work with a horizontal picture but look very small beside one 40 inches tall. If you go with sconces, you may want to be sure they coordinate with the light fixture.
