Hey Bob,

Which do you think is better? Rojo Billiante or Giombo? I like Hachiya a lot, but have some concerns about hardiness in my zone 7A. I already grow a Fuyu.

Giombo is a shade better, R/B is more reliable and precocious. Both are keepers for sure.

Giombo makes a larger tree. KBS is another excellent one. Any of these are more than enough to satisfy.

I used to have a very young Fuyu but died and now I am left with the rootstock. Next spring I will try to obtain some persimmon scions and start over again.

Do not know your way of grafting persimmon, I prefer to graft Asian to Seedling native persimmon.

The smaller the rootstock the better. Older wood is a little too strong for Asian persimmon.

I graft on rootstock as low as possible, like 2 or 3 inches above the ground, longer rootstock makes taller tree’s. That’s me. I like a W/T graft, you will see NO Grafting mark.

Wedge cut facing north For better strong wind protection if your prevailing winds are from the south during growing season.

I have not grafted fruit trees before and so pretty inexperienced. My rootstock did produce a bunch of suckers close to the ground that are about pencil thick now or may be a tad bit smaller. But I will give it a try and see how it goes. The rootstock is native persimmon.

Grafting is a broad subject, more than dozen ways to succeed in grafting. Different varieties might need different way to graft. You cannot use w/t graft if rootstock is too big, sions too small, might have to a bark graft or cleft. Google the Fruit mentor grafting vids To start.

One word of advice: use only one to graft to, get rid of the rest, making sure that No water sprouts or more growth are starting below the graft. All energy need to go to your sion.

You need a very thin, sharp blade.

Thanks Bob and Dave. I have only done some grafting for my bonsai plants - mainly to create branches on empty segments of stems/branches. I have used side grafting, approach and thread grafting. Occasionally have to repair a broken branch using simple splice graft.

Whip and tongue graft looks cool. I have to get used to all the names of different types of graft. Will spend some time this winter reading more thoroughly.

Bob, what happened to you as a single forum guy? Didn't last long.

Silica, I have a lot of friends on different forums. Since I don’t expand in my collection of potted tree’s I really don’t do much anymore. To be honest, I don’t have many friends here, besides most are gone. I can work with the regulars here on this forum, no problem.

I like to read what members are doing, just don’t like boring stuff.

If I can find one forum that cover what I am doing, that would a ideal forum for me. Citrus here, inground somewhere else, sucks. Use Older I pad and desktop with 32” screen, one ap, for reducing pixels, no photo ap,s. I pad does a decent job, easy.

I am not in citrus only, more diversify. My inground tree’s are spread out, much more than citrus. When it comes to picking out a perfect forum for me, I don’t have an answer. The structure of different forums are not to my liking, can cope with Houzz, sort of, been on it for so many years as Persimmonbob. I was a major contributor for persimmon than.
