Growing cantaloupe in zone 8b?

I haven't tried growing this here so I'm wondering if it does well? What are the soil conditions, additives, etc that would help it be successful? I have sandy soil but have been adding compost. I have rock phosphate but wasn't sure if that's good for cantaloupes?
