Does Anyone Recognize This Nativity Set

DH bought this set last year at a Thrift Shop. He wonders if there isn't some more animals that might go with it but the only thing we know about it is:

1 - it is large

2 - it says "Made in China" on the bottom of most of the pieces

3 - it's made of resin

4 - there are fabric and jewel embellishments on the pieces

I am hoping that one of you out there has an Aunt Sally that bought the set five years ago at Kirkland's or Aunt Susie got it at the Dollar Tree ten years ago!!!

Help a girl out!

can't help you but it's very pretty.

You might not be able to find out who made it or where it was purchased. Could you look for "nativity scene figures in resin" through Google shopping?

have you done an image search?

I used Elizabeth's idea on Etsy and immediately came up with this and many more choices. I would just double-check the scale. Etsy Resin Nativity Animals

The style of the characters reminds me of one donated to our church. I think it was from the Smithsonian Museum store. It was very nice!!!

The Etsy are Fontanini and no they are no where near the same.

Yes, it's a Fontanini. I had that set for years but gave it to my daughter in law. I bought it at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Ma. about thirty years ago. They have value now. At the time I bought mine it was over $100.00

This is just an idea of what the whole thing is worth.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-X-Large-Manger-Creche-Made-Italy-Accom-Large-Hummel-Fontanini-Nativity/383321746678?hash=item593fc1acf6:g:qgMAAOSwSlVd9tHH You can research more. The creche looks authentic but I don't think my set was resin.

arcy, I'm not sure why art has to be 'all the same' though I do know other people who also believe that. OP asked for animals that 'might go with it,' not 'animals that they precisely match and look as if they came from the exact same set.'

I love your nativity set, the figures are beautiful. I'm afraid there are so many that are made in China it would be difficult to identify certain set.

Just feeling your pain as last year I looked for a nice nativity set, not easily damaged, to give to my daughter in law with a house full of little kids/toddlers, etc. The selection was thin. I looked on Etsy, Amazon and also at my local thrift centers. We had a Fontannini one at work, very nice and simple too. They used to be ubiquitous, not so much anymore . . .

LOL my bad Bestyears...I just read she was looking for the maker. I am all about using what works. Fontanini has HUNDREDS of options and as you pointed out a few different sizes. Ebay is a great place to shop Fontanini. I think it is a tough item to find open stock because most retailers found MOST of their sales happened after Christmas when things were all marked down. On line there is a Fontanini store and Amazon stocks them too.

The way I understood the OP, she wants to know if there were supposed to be more animals that came with this set, not that they necessarily wanted more. We know her set is not made by Fontanini, because she says most of the pieces are marked "Made in China".

Martha Scott, if you could post a close-up picture of a single figurine maybe it would make it easier to identify. I'm curious, because I wouldn't mind having a set like that myself.

Yayagal was that a completed auction or an asking (wishing) price? Search completed auctions for what things actually sell for.

Most things made of resin have little actual value because they are mass produced. Kinda like things from Franklin Mint.

Arcy, is that your nativity display? It is lovely!

Arcy, I've never seen such an extensive nativity set! Could you possibly take a few close up pics of it in sections, so we can see the detail?

Martha, would you measure one of the figures? Large doesn't really help determine how big it really is.

This Nativity was my father's. He built the stable and the scape it sits on. He collected the figures over several years. He found bowls and buckets at craft stores, what he didn't find he made like a shovel and ladders etc. These pictures are of the last time I saw it set up in his home. A few years ago mom and dad downsized and dad gave his set to me, as he knew how much I loved it. He kept the Holy Family and a few angels so I replaced them and have added and rearranged a few. The post above there is an Easter scape and an Christmas scape. I took dad's stable off and replaced it with the crucifiction scene. Some of the figures I use in both. The pictures in this box are the kings I replaced and the holy family just arriving...Jesus will not appear until the 25th. My children all have a Fontanini set, stable made by their grandfather. My youngest has mom and dad's kings. Since I became a God mother I have given a fontanini piece to my god children each Christmas until they had a full set. My children's god parents did the same. This is an excellent set for homes with small children. They are pretty indestructible. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the close up pics, arcy, your nativity set is amazing! (I seem to recall from pics posted years ago, that you collect them, but this one, started by your father, must be your most exquisite one!

I used to collect the angels from Nativity sets. I would find them at flea markets. The best ones were always made in Italy and the oldest ones were paper mache. I lost them in the flood.

Yes I have a few Nativity sets, and yes the one from my dad is the star of my collection. This year I have been posting them with the daily alphabet thread. Marilyn I have a few angels too...many I made. My peeps would probably think a culling by a flood would be a good thing for me and my collections!! LOL

I wonder what some of these folks who work in these Chinese factories that turn out these scenes, as well as blow up Mickey Mouse and angel ornaments, think about our American culture,

When in Naples a few years ago I became acquainted with the Italian passion for elaborate nativity scenes. These are huge and it seems that people work on them and add to them year after. year. Here is a link to an article about them. https://www.catholicsandcultures.org/italy/presepe-italian-nativity

Also popular is to have a small squatting figure somewhere in that scene that is seen with his pants down and squatting to take poop.

I was taken aback when I saw that. Here is a link. It seems to be quite popular in Spain as well as southern Italy.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caganer

The scope and scale and detail of these huge scenes makes what most of us see as the nativity scene pretty lame next to theirs. They also will sometimes have the scene around a cave and not a little straw hut. Caves play heavily in the history of that region.

Husbands family are southern Italian from the region around Naples and I never heard mention of it from them. Maybe they were too poor. Possible.

The markets in Naples sell a lot of this kind of thing, probably more to tourists. Just guessing.

Some of these are elaborate! Scenes made of small figures can be so enchanting.

The figures that people are adding to their scenes represent some modern popular figures such as sports stars and celebrities and other recognizable characters. No doubt tump has turned up in a few whimsical ones and I did see Obama offered as well. (How fitting if he were to represent the little pooping figure!). There are only so many robed desert people and farm animals to add. They need something new to keep it all current.

Does anyone have a thoroughly modern one with different characters?

    That would be interesting.

I have none. It does not represent my personal world view, but I love miniatures and scenes set with little figures.

Marilyn, there is a tradition of paper mâché figures being made in southern Italy. They use paper that is made from cotton or linen. Unlike paper made from cellulose, it will last.

They have taken paper mâché to an art form.

We saw it in the city of Lecce. Beautiful stuff and such skill!

if you collected these you probably already know about that, but I don't think that is widely known here in the US.

You can google Italian paper mâché and see some really skillfully made sculptures.

I didn't know much about them, but I started out collecting the donkeys and the cows, and I kept seeing the angels, and I started collecting them. They had beautiful hand painted faces.

This is my sister's home, I love this.

Is the stable made of resin or wood? If it's wood, it's lovely.

Was it in a box like this? I have a very similar one from my childhood, 1970s maybe 1980 with 11 pieces three of which are animals.

Yayagal -- yes the stable is made of wood -- it's very nice actually. I do think it was originally a high quality set (which means it wasn't Dollar Tree -- LOL!)

roarah -- no, it wasn't in the original box -- it was just in a "box"! DH picked it up -- perhaps it wasn't even in a box at the TS -- So, no, it wasn't in that box -- besides thats a porcelain set -- mine is definitely resin.

Martha Scott, I could tell from the photo that it was a higher end set than something from any dollar store. It almost reminds me of something you would see at the Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge, TN. Actually, your set looks better than any on their website ! I would love to see a close-up photo of one of the pieces and know how tall it is. I have to say, your set is gorgeous, and even though it's not a Fontanini, it still must be a fairly expensive set.

Martha Scott, It looks a lot like the Members Mark sets I see on ebay....

I went to an antique mall today and saw these.

Martha Scott, I don't know anything about your set but want to say how beautiful I think it is.

My mom sent me a Fontanini set in 1984 and I love it. I have added an extra 5 sheep and the three kings.

Has anyone heard of the story of the fox and the manger? My 87 year old neighbor lent me her first edition copy of the book.

It's a charming story. She has a fox that she added to her set many, many years ago. I liked it so much that I found a fox on ebay and added it to my set. He's in the lower right hand corner.

The little guy taking a poop.....I had one years ago. Bought it in an antique shop on Washington Ave. in Houston, shortly after I was married, almost 55 years ago. Had no idea it belonged to a Nativity set. It disappeared. I think my brother took it. He thought it was very funny. I have been to literally hundreds of flea markets, antique shops, etc. And I have never seen another one.

I have a bit of a thing for Nativity scenes from different countries. Unfortunately they can be difficult to find if it’s not Christmas season. It all started in a little village in Ireland, a place I stayed in with my family when I was 9. There was a woodworker who made a variety of things - my parents bought several items, including a Nativity set. Many years later, my SIL traveled to the same tiny village where, coincidentally, a college friend was born so she bought me the Nativity. Dh and I visited about 5-6 years ago but the shop had closed.

MIL then gifted me this Lladro set from Spain - this is right after I initially set it up but I added greenery later.

This one I got in Germany. Unfortunately, one of my dogs chewed up the tree!

This last one is my most recent addition. Last December, dh was in South Africa for business. He searched high and low for a Nativity set to surprise me for Christmas. Because all the pieces were hand wrapped, I only opened one to see what it looked like. Last week I opened all of it up for the first time. Each piece is hand painted then glazed. This is after I quickly set it up, but I want to move the pieces around for a better display.

When my oldest was a toddler, someone gave her the Fisher Price Little People (anyone remember those?) musical Nativity. Oh how she, and then *all* of my kids loved to play with it. If you press the angel on top, it plays Away in a Manger. I still put it out even though my oldest is 21 and my youngest is 15!

Martha, no advice but good luck on finding more pieces/animals to your set.

Check out Bronners. They are in Michigan and have so many nativity sets, plus anything you may need for it.

Bought an ornament for my niece who just bought her first home and had Bronners personalize it and send to her. She was blown away by it!
