Placing artwork above off centered TV

last modified: 5 years ago

We intentionally had a built-in cabinet placed off center so that we would have room for a chair near the fireplace (Currently Christmas tree is there) I’m not sure I like the way the art work looks because it’s centered with the wall and not centered over the TV. Should I remove the art completely? Any suggestions for this wall space?

i think your script art is best placed as it is centered on the wall. Can’t offer any wall art suggestions with limited view of room & holiday decor in place. That’s a project best looked at when things are back in their usual spots. I’m confused about built in cabinet though - the TV console doesn’t appear to be built in So not sure if I’m misunderstanding. Your usual arrangement with it off center & a chair where tree is makes sense though. Looks like an inviting & comfy room.

Thank you for your input. Yes, the TV console was custom built and is attached to the wall (kinda wish I didn’t do that now). I do love having a chair near the fireplace but the off center script art is making me second guess my decision. I know it wouldn’t look right centered over TV though.

Here is a view without the Christmas decor.

Script art looks centered on wall, TV is what’s placed off center. Any art on that wall should absolutely be centered on wall, not over TV. I think what you’ve done with TV placement makes the most sense and uses the space in best way. It’s nice that you don’t have every seat facing the TV but do have good seats facing TV when that’s what’s wanted. I do really like the chair by fireplace - it looks like a great spot to cozy up with some to read. Is a floor lamp needed next to chair to make that a reading spot? You have a theme with your art decor - script on walls & chair fabric & also a message. I laughed that your message of “stay home” which meant something entirely different last year is so appropriate now.😊. The size of art on fireplace is great I think. For myself, I’d be on the lookout for a similar sized piece that grabs you & has color in it when you’re ready to change that out. Your current color scheme is very muted and relaxing but easy to add pops of color with pillows & throws.

Thank you KW! I do have a floor lamp now but in this photo didn’t have it yet. I prefer the muted pallet over pops of color. I really think I need something substantial behind the chair to balance that wall.

Toni, I disagree that wall needs anything more on it. I’ve learned that not every space needs to be filled. I’m guessing your home is open floor plan so also guessing the window wall & TV wall are the only walls for this room. The fireplace & stone are the focal point of the room & I think adding wall art to adjacent walls will only serve to clutter things up which is definitely not the look you have or seem to be aiming for. the room also has ceiling beams for detail. The lamp that’s not in your picture should be considered a visual item on wall when looking at it. I noted the 2 small floral pieces by the chair & thought they should be taken out as too small & lost in space as well as not needed. I’ll go back to my suggestion of a large piece over fireplace that has more detail than the script piece you have there. It doesn’t need to be a busy piece - something with a quiet scene or one large detail such as an animal - art is very personal so can’t suggest anything but you’d know it’s for you when you see it. My point is that I think with a stronger piece there, you‘ll like the balance in the room.

    That would drive me nuts...

The wall will be fine with nothing on it. This is is well decorated well finished space. Job well done! Remove it and leave it empty.

That’s what I was thinking. I originally placed the script above the TV to bring the eyes up bc of the vaulted ceilings but the problem was the centering bc of the TV placement. Hopefully it doesn’t look to bare once I remove it. Thank you for the compliment!

I think I would do something like this, with my paper (literally, paper taped up on my monitor, and then photo taken with my phone of laptop screen) colorful art.

Edited to add: now, looking at my mockup, I'd probably go a little skinnier on both pieces - maybe one or both could be a wall hanging or a row of smaller items.

Here are a couple examples from my kitchen:

    And my bathroom:

Well aren‘t you amazing! Wow, thank you for taking the time to do that! I like your idea!

I would take down the wall words and the sign over the fireplace. They just don’t do anything for the room.

Hmm. Never thought of that. I’ll definitely consider it. Thank you.

Just for fun (and because I'm an insomniac, lately) and given your muted colors...

Or something like these, placed horizontally or vertically:

You can play around with shapes. Sometimes, a lovely scarf or table runner can work as a wall hanging, too.

Thank you. I appreciate your time and looking forward to taking our tree down and rethinking the space.

Could you cascade the words to the left of the tv in a pattern similar to the hanging vases? I love the words but they look kind of small on the wall where they are.

    That’s a great idea! hmm...

I wanted to thank you all for your help & show you what I ended up doing. It’s very clean and I no longer have to look at the off centered script art. Happy New Year!

LOOKS GREAT!! Awesome job love it

Thank you! I’m trying to get used to the empty wall but I do like how open and clean it feels.

Hey all, happy new year 🎊 I can’t get used to the bare wall now that I’ve taken the script art down. Any suggestions?

I changed out the art above fireplace btw.

Like the clock much better than previous sign art in that space. Your fireplace stone shows as the focal point that it’s meant to be!

Thank you. I’m glad someone pointed that out to me. When I took the previous art down and replaced it with the clock I loved it!

I like the clock much better than the script art. And I like the wall without the script much better. It hasn't been very long, maybe give yourself some more time to get used to the simpler wall?

Otherwise, maybe put this clock, or a larger one on the wall above the tv and centered with the peak. I feel like something round like a clock will not look as off when centered as a square or rectangular piece. Then you would need to find something else for the fireplace.

Thank you. That’s something we’re considering but not sure it will look good off centered. I’m thinking something centered above the TV and another above the chair?

Can I ask where you got the clock? I have a red brick covered vaulted ceiling with a 65" tv and am considering a big clock. After reading all the suggestions here, I may take a picture when the space is done with construction to get some good feedback like you received. Thanks!
