Is this A Fig Tree?

Just closed on a new house and discovered what looks like a fig tree in the backyard. When I google search the image to attempt to identify the plant, it returns red elderberry as the number one result and fig isn’t even suggested.

I should have a better idea when the leaves emerge in spring but I’m very curious to know in the meantime.

Any thoughts on whether this is fig or not?

P.s. This is in S.F. CA

It reminds me of a hydrangea.

After looking at some photos of dormant hydrangea, I think you are correct

I hope you can keep it, or at least let it bloom to see what you have. Keep in mind that some old-fashioned garden hydrangeas bloom on old wood (growth produced the previous summer), so if you cut it down now, it may not bloom until 2022.

So I would let it be (even though it's not much to look at right now) and see if you like the flowers. It should produce more shoots from the base and form a nice shrub.

Yeah I’m planning to leave it and see what blooms. If it forms into a shrub it may look quite nice in its current location.

Great! Good luck! I so miss growing them...
