Kitchen Layout Help

First picture is original Kitchen layout, second and third are the ones we are playing around with to make it more modern. We just started the build process and still have some flexibility on the design.

Need design gurus to help us figure out what is recommended aesthetically as well as functionally?

The only viable plan here is the second and your island is too wide as drawn. You will have an unnecessary seam. Get it down to a five foot width.

What is the point to the DOOR to the pantry from "bonus" ?

    At any rate:

ABSOLUTE no to a corner sink, no to the third plan which is awful.

Show the entire floor of the house, not JUST the kitchen.

Two islands don’t fit. And it would be a shame to have pantries on the outside wall instead of windows.

In addition to the comments from emily and Jan I’d suggest the need to really plan out the sunroom space taking into consideration traffic patterns everywhere. You can’t design one space without knowing it’s effect on the other.

is the sunroom like a family room. I'd wrap a U kitchen over on the right instead of bonus and pantry.. . then in the floorspace invest in a big round table w great seating..it's the spot between sunroom and kitchen ...you'll have better storage so you don't need to creep the kitchen out and cut into other spaces so much.. How much storage do you need..... this needs to be determined.... but you already have the open flow between sunroom/ middle area..I'd take advantage w a small family room set up in sunroom and large table instead of island ..keep kitchen work area over on right.....lower wall can take some shallow pantry cabs if you need more...another 6 to 8 feet avail if you need it. this is really a case where simplicity would win out if it were mine.......get that floorspace set up for seating [ table] and some upgrades for sunroom. spend on wonderful flooring throughout...maybe add a window on the kitchen wall.

Where is the door from the garage or entry? A few thoughts - it would likely be better to keep the kitchen on the exterior wall to get the natural light. It would probably be more efficient to make grocery unloading easy by making sure the pantry is along the path from the entryway. If you keep the kitchen in the current footprint you'll want to check your aisle widths (36" would be ideal in that fridge walkway). You might consider moving the fridge towards the end of a run so people can get to the fridge without walking through the rest of the space. Putting the sink in the middle of the island is pretty decent for locating it close to the range but doesn't leave you too much prep space on either side.

None are good. You want windows in the kitchen. A pantry and bonus room should never be on an outside wall

Thank you all. Here is the floor plan to help understand the flow between the spaces. The U-shaped kitchen looked conventional so we were trying to make it more contemporary. We are hoping to get enough light in the kitchen from the sun room. would no windows in the kitchen still be a concern? The bonus area in the redesign us meant to be a sorting desk.

I agree with all above. And it is an extra hard no to the two island plan.

You get contemporary design by choosing contemporary cabinets, colors, backsplash, lighting, and appliances. You don't get contemporary by making a design worse than it needs to be, especially by taking out windows.

Speaking of contemporary - most contemporary kitchens don't include desks. That's a 90's era design. Having your pantry THROUGH a bonus room just means it's more of a pain to get to it...plus you'll be tripping over a chair. If you think a sorting desk is something you need, get a nice secretary desk and put it in your living room or dining room. mama's plan is much better.

Cpartist- when you say a pantry should never be on an outside wall, is that because the pantry contents would be more attractive to insects? Or just the window issue?

I believe it is because exterior wall space is a premium space and a pantry is very much ancillary.

That layout by mama looks great!

If you really want a pantry/mud room/bonus area, could it be on the other wall? Potentially it could open into the garage too?
