Independence - The soil was too dry to sustain perfect foliage by the time it bloomed.

I was into garden shots this summer so I don't have portraits of some hosta like Icy Halo in the lower right corner. It is taller than the back of the bench and the tallest hosta in my garden - even taller than Sum and Substance that I have had more than twice as long.

nw, so sad here. I needed a day of wallowing. I cannot imagine how the athletes themselves deal with it. Too much.

Today is better and my thought are wandering to the garden and the draft-both positive signs of things to come.

im still pretty groggy and haven’t had enough caffeine but when the kids nap I will look for pictures. I have Inniswood, I just don’t know if I remembered to take pictures of it!

oursteelers..I thought of you as we watched..what a horrible start..then signs of life..they had a chance..just not enough time..we were bummed about the Colts..they should've won..they made some poor decisions..you're right..my heart goes out to those poor players..they're suffering much more..

I watched every single playoff game this weekend rooting for the best match up for the Steelers and the worst match up for the Chiefs. I kept rooting for the Colts (at least they had a chance) until I reminded myself of Steelers best interest. What a waste of time. Not sure I'll watch any more football. I could always root for Brady (and Rogers and Chiefs and Ravens . . . ) to lose.

I would agree that Inniswood looks like Gold Standard. Here is a mass of Inniswood on the left next to a recently relocated Gold Standard, a mistake I’ll have to rethink. i also have to divide the Inniswood. It is a vigorous grower for me.

I’m voting for the Bills. My strongest memory of their team is all their losses in the 90’s-their fans deserve to have something to celebrate

I like the seer-sucker corrugation throughout the Inniswood leaves. I have only had it for about 2 years, so this was the first year I photographed it.

I'm lacking in the I department, see a few I'd like to add, especially Ivory Coast. Infatuation was another victim of the storm, will replace it some day.

a funny pic..I couldn't get a good angle of the 3 new EE leaves while in the kit..this pic shows 2..I put a poppy to show the crease on my biggest leaf..it's declining..I read that plants absorb some nutrients from declining leaves.. removing the leaves deprives the plant of this opportunity..so I'm leaving it awhile..

Yeah, Debra, I’ve been a fan forever as well. When the Pack started playing in Milwaukee my dad became a season ticket holder for those games. When I was 6 and my brother was 9 we would go through the turnstiles together and share a seat under one ticket. Try that today.

As a side note, my grandfather was a cheese maker in Green Bay in the 1920s and after making cheese on the morning of game day would go the games at halftime. No locker rooms in those days so players just sat around each end zone at half. Gramps would bring flasks in his trench coat and give the players a snort to prep for the second half. I guess that makes him the first cheesehead.

Seeing that I have no "I" hostas to post. Steve, you reminded me of some unknowns from September this year. I sent pics to a friend who enjoys eating a variety of mushrooms but she could not identify any of these. In the past I have had the large (12" plus) moon-like mushroom but not this year.

Hi Diane - those are not the same as spin out bags. They will not inhibit tree roots from invading.

I have a plant finder app on my phone but it won't do anything with mushrooms. I guess those are tricky (and dangerous) to (mis)identify. I remember a Sonoma County winemaker (Sam Sebastiani) dying from eating some wild collected mushrooms. He was a foodie too.

Windymess, Island Breeze does seem to be a strong grower. Yellow coloration comes out better with more sun.

Diane, great mushroom pictures! In addition to what Steve said, spin out bags are made to be buried into the ground. Grow bags are a replacement for pots.

Steve and newhostalady, thanks for response on those bags. Whenever I have buried plants in pots I cut off the bottoms (for drainage) and hoping to eliminate the oak roots coming in. Have not actually lifted any pots yet. The bags look like they could be quite heavy to move around.

i don't worry about Oak tree roots. They tend to be deeper rooted than the shallow, invasive Maple trees I deal with.

Diane, no need to cut off the bottom of pots that you bury. If you have tree roots, they would easily go through the small drainage holes of the pot. To avoid tree roots, you would bury a regular pot in the garden and turn it a couple of times in the season.

Am I the only Browns fan here? We watched in utter amazement and held our breath until the end. I will have to take and organize pictures this year. I’ve got Ice Palace, Island Breeze and I think Ivory Coast. Photos as always are great.

I agree with you Steve. I've tried to cover and protect, and found that sometimes it actually causes more damage than I may have prevented (of course you never know for sure).
