Kitchen layout help

last modified: 5 years ago

Full disclosure, I previously posted here with my own ideas for this space, and got some helpful feedback. I'm still not able to land on a final plan I love and I wonder if someone else isn't stuck in the ruts I am, perhaps there is an altogether different and ingenious way to put this kitchen together.

Restrictions:

*exterior door has to be on back wall in area indicated, toward that side of the back wall.

*Need nice big window to backyard

*Need symmetric-looking window to street as indicated, centered ~7' from back corner of house (corner lot so this exterior view needs to look reasonable)

*Would like fridge and everyday dishes coming out of dishwasher closer to dining room side

*Nice to have fridge on that side too as shopping items come up from garage to be put away.

*don't want the kitchen to extend past ~10'5" from rear wall to give ample room for large living area

*cabinets on right hand wall could extent to ~12' from rear on that wall.

*If an island, prefer a big flat work surface uninterrupted by prep sink (I like having just one sink)

*Fridge is not going to be counter depth.

*Pantry space has to fit in this kitchen area as well.

*Really want seating for 5 in kitchen

It's a wide and shallow kitchen. Thanks for help from anyone who finds this fun :}

9-3 stair wall on kitchen side needs to be shallow pantry storage behind doors. then make a galley kitchen coming off right wall at corner of home..... one run up against back wall under backyard window....then aisle [48-52 inches] , then second run toward liv room . the living room forward run can be quite long...12 to 15 feet from right wall over to stair wall leaving room for pantry as mentionned on stair wall and walk passage to back door. the back wall run will have to be shorter to clear back door which you aren't saying what this will be exactly. the living room side of your run will have overhang for your seated meals . again-12 to 15 feet long w great stools/pendant lights....not infringing on living room... this is very open. pantry on stair wall will help w reducing wall cabinets somewhat so it wont feel super kitchen-like. the galley w drawers for storing is your key. You have to decide more about window placement/ inches of glass/ so i can't put your appliances and sink in for you. Start w range and fridge on back wall and sink on forward run, facing seats and liv room . Might be nice to state what problems you've had in drawing something up...what are the factors you run up against. thats why this is a very simple plan...GALLEY . Dining rooms can house extra storage..make use of that stair wall...incorporate seating with the openness of liv room and yet it is not too pushed over there, like an island would be. thats my stab at it. Good luck.

Without knowing where your backyard access door and windows exactly are, it's hard to determine if you can use that wall adjacent to the stairs for millwork. I'm assuming it's offset at least 18" so you can install 18" deep pantry millwork. Also not sure of your plumbing situation. Is this new or remodel? Most efficient use of space would be to have your sink and DW in the island. This allows you more flexibility with appliances and open shelving (if desired) at the walls. Here's a quick layout based on an "open" plan.

Ethan, that's basically the plan I've come up with. Only issue is I won't use a counter depth fridge. I have the fridge over with the pantry cabinets, and yes those can be 30" deep alongside full depth fridge recess. This makes the work triangle rather large. Would rather not have any sink or range in the island... Glad to know someone else had mostly similar idea without seeing my drawing first. Thanks.

Yes the work triangle will be disrupted a bit with the fridge over there but looks like you’ve thought it through. Keep in mind for pantry storage, you don’t want anything deeper than 18” because things will get lost in the back. Mmost full height pantry cabinets are 12-18” depth. Unless you had planned on having 24” base cabs with more shallow ones for uppers, or even tall cabinets sitting on base and countertops since you have the fridge over there, it’d be a nice place to set food aside instead of turning around and using the island counter space when needed.
