All things basement design and finishing

We are working on finishing our basement and I need some help. The main rec room area will
be a play area/mini sticks and TV/media space. Our house faces north so no direct sunlight enters the room. Our basement floor is quite comfortable at a constant 16-17C year round. My family homesteaded here in 1879 and there has never been an issue with water in the basements of houses on this yard so other than a hot water tank leak or flood from upstairs or kids spilling, we aren’t too worried about water in the basement. We are planning on installing shiplap along north wall of the stairs.
Specifically I am looking for:

  1. Any recommendations on a layout to accommodate both areas comfortably?

  2. We were thinking Mohawk Air.O Rockwellcarpet on the stairs, hall to bedrooms, bedrooms, and maybe hall to rec room.
We are thinking looselay vinyl planks in the rec room. One sample we have is Cascade Creative Impressions Courtyard Oak. Is it too dark? Too much variation in colour?

  3. Functional design tips- paint colour? Wallpaper? Feature wall?

  4. Storage and organization ideas for media area and toys.

Thanks in advance.

What are mini sticks? I have no idea which rooms are which. IMO flooring should all be the same including the stairs add a runner maybe and rugs in spaces where you need them . I assume the large room is the play room/ media space . I hate toys all over the place so closed toy storage along a wall is IMO a must. Is that storage space in the upper left corner? IMO shiplap is overdone and really becoming a dated look but that I guess will depend on your style. I like play rooms separate from media rooms since I like to watch TV without noisy kids but again a personal preference . How old are the kids ? Are you planning a huge TV and surround sound ? I think a bit more info . How many seats do you need for instance.

Mini sticks is indoor hockey with small sticks.

I had wondered about the same floor throughout and just adding rugs. The stairs are off our great room upstairs has poor acoustics(quite loud) which I didn’t consider when planning and designing. I am hoping carpeted stairs will maybe help that a little and reduce the noise of running up the stairs. Maybe a runner would be best?

Large room is the rec room. I see I uploaded the wrong pic of the plan- the mechanical room and the two small square storage rooms switched spots so the storage rooms are at the front.

I don’t like toys all over either. One storage room is a canning room. The other one is storage/seed starting room. Maybe I should consider combining them and use one for toys? Under the stairs is also a storage area. I have 1300sft attached garage and breezeway with lots of storage so I can be flexible in the use of space downstairs.

Kids are almost 10, 6 & 2.5. We also have a tv upstairs so can be away from them if it’s too loud. I’m sure my husbands dream is a big tv with surround but not likely at this point. A family hangout area and space for kids to play and hang out with their friends is the goal.

I hear you on the shiplap. The idea came about when we were thinking of ideas to fill this gap between the wall and the stairs.
