Long Tail Lights, long-neglected in a pot. I did get it in the ground these season. I love the way this cascades. It is really a beautiful plant.

Liberty 4/16/20.

Luna Moth. This poor plant has a terrible case of foliar nematodes, but it looks great for the first 2 months of the season. My other Luna Moth is unaffected, but much smaller.

Last Dance, a waxy plant. I did this one a great disservice several years ago by dividing it when it was young. I thought I was supposed to divide hostas. It set this one back, but it finally stopped pouting this year (3-4 years later!).

A row of Lemon Limes, which is really effective when they bloom and look like a row of soldiers standing at attention with purple plumes on their hats. But I’m a little worried about keeping them in check because they grow like crazy in all the sun they get here. And because I’ve seen pictures of Laurie’s (peren’s) and I know their potential. May have to make some changes.

Luna Moth, how do I love thee, let me count the ways: you’re beautiful, you grow like crazy, you never complain or look grumpy- even in extreme heat or when you you get a little more sun than you like, you play nice with your neighbors, your blooms are beautiful and stand up straight, you age well- lasting long into the late season. Ahhh, one of my most favorites.

Here's my Liberty before I had to move it.

Here it is in August settling in, and I hope it likes its new home. I took a lot of root ball and needed my DH to help me move it up the hill. He guestimates is was about 65 lbs. which is why I needed help!

My Luna Moth in August. It never really colors up as much as I see here but subtle is also pretty. :-)

Little Miss Sunshine starts out green and yellows up soon after to earn its sunshine name.

Hey NW, don’t know if you noticed but I only have two like you. I thought I was going to do better taking photos last season........not! Looks like you and I are still lagging in that department..........the hellebores look pretty happy, mine struggle.

I love those hellebores..they're on the north side..they've produced lots of seedlings and filled in that area pretty well..

Well, I only have 4 "L" hosta. That's not much more than "2." I'm like you nicholsworth---a lot of photos of some and not any of others. I tried to do better this last year but somehow still didn't manage it. Maybe next year?

I decided to refresh my lancifolia by dividing it and then finding new homes for some of the divisions. I only have this one and one in a pot. I can see my neighbor's backyard from my bedroom. They have a few lancifolias. They grow a lot better at my neighbor's without all the root competition like I have. Also they get more sun there. I'm envious that they look better next door!

Here's Little Wonder.

Last spring was really challenging because of the severe frost. Liberty was out so much. What was she thinking! I covered up my perennials with anything I had available and this Liberty got the full treatment. I stuck in some stakes to hold up the bed sheets that I used to cover up the whole plant. I felt like a crazy lady (because Liberty is in my front garden) and I didn't see anyone else covering up their plants.

Liberty is one of my top 3 favorites. I'd do anything for her!

I hope my Liberty takes off this year. It got dug up by a squirrel just after I planted it and could have been out of the ground for a couple of days before noticed. That was at least 4 years ago, geesh. I want it to look like the beautiful specimens here!

your Liberty is beautiful..I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm a little crazy..planting with a lantern..out in the rain and snow under an umbrella..covering plants with boxes, pots, towels etc..surrounding a pot with chairs to make it inconvenient for squirrels..my own husband has said "are you finished?..you should come in you look a little nutty"..😂

Light the Match (you could have called it Sign Me Up, but I love the name). The short-lived blushing color is amazing, but it looks great the rest of the year too and I love a Hosta that changes its appearance. I'm almost to the point where if I see your name on a new Hosta I'll just order it sight unseen (luckily, I don't need to do that). Also, congrats on your Hosta making the cover of the online Hosta Journal.

utog - I nearly ordered Lime Ripple after seeing yours earlier and I had Long Tail Lights in my cart but it didn't make the final cut. Perhaps if I bought another house, I could plant some there . . .

so many other beautiful Ls - Lemon Frost, Lemontini, Ladybug, Little Sunspot but I think Little Miss Sunshine is making it on the list.

One of the things I love about this forum is that I don't feel that crazy about the things I do for my hosta because many of you are doing the same things! I can feel normal here! LOL Thanks for sharing nicholsworth!

I found that growing Liberty required patience. (Peren.all, next year may be THE YEAR for your Liberty to shine!) At first I liked Liberty; then I really liked her; then, a few years later, I still really liked her (but when was I going to love her!?). Year 5 was the magic year.

Growing hosta has been interesting. There are many hosta that you just need to put in time in order to see their transformation---and Liberty is one of those. It seems to me that there are many hosta that look nice right from the start, and then continue to be just as lovely as they grow larger. They just don't change significantly, other than getting larger. These are the kinds of things I take into consideration when I purchase a hosta. Probably due to the fact that my garden is small compared to many of yours. This winter I have been thinking about which hosta I have and really love---which would I take with me if I moved ----which ones are strong growers----etc. I may start another thread about that.

I agree with Steve that you, sunnywood, have many mature hosta. I too love to see them and their mature look.

Sunnywood, I have a question about your Linda Sue. I have moved mine deeper and deeper into more shade since mine really gets brown and fried in any sun. How much shade do you grows yours in? Van Wade (named this hosta for his daughter) used to grow them in quite bright light (lots of them all around the stone sign) and I don't remember them looking like mine--I got mine from Wade and Gatton after I saw them there.

Miles, my garden is in the very northeastern corner of NY zone 4b. Linda Sue gets a lot of sun at least from late morning to mid afternoon. What zone are you in? I make sure the ground stays moist.

i am in zone 5b, I think. I am in the Cleveland area about 5 miles south of Lake Erie. Our summers have been extremely warm and we haven't had much rain over the past 5-6 years. I have Linda Sue in a shaded area that gets some morning sun. Even that seemed to burn the leaves so I replanted it further back in the bed under the oak trees so that it wouldn't burn. I will try and dig out some pictures I took last summer. I am not good at organizing my pictures so I will see what I can find. Wade & Gatton was in Bellville which is about 90 minutes south of me. Van Wade had lots of Linda Sues planted in an area that got quite a bit of sun but they never looked as bad as mine does in morning sun.

Steveduggins, thanks for the 2nd photo of Lemon Love Note.....you have so many yellow/chartreuse hostas which I admire. I agree with the comments about Sunnywood’s garden. He has so many fully mature and large hostas. Love seeing them!

Old dirt, my experience with Lancifolia is you can't kill it. I dug one clump up in the spring and just placed the root ball above the ground to try and get rid of it. The following spring the root ball sprouted more leaves.

Newhostalady, I agree with your comments on Liberty, slow to start but once it gets going, wow.

Thank everyone for the beautiful pictures, maybe this year I will get more pictures to share. I took the advice of the group, and order 2 Liberties for some urns I have waiting for hosta. I am so excited!! I thoroughly checked each Liberty picture and am reassured it is a good choice. Thanks!
