defining functional spaces

Hi, I’m struggling with how to update my living. The entire space is roughly 23 x 12. I’ve basically split it into 2 spaces, with the entry way and the sitting area. I’m looking at replacing the rug, thinking I could bring in a little color. The current rug is 8x10 and I have the front of the couch on the rug. Would it be better to get a smaller, maybe square under the coffee table (I’m not adverse to replacing the coffee table )? Would love some advice on setting up this room. Thanks in advance 😎

I wonder if your console could go next to the door? Would it fit? It doesn't really work as a sofa table. I would consider lighter curtains. I think the fireplace being blocked by the TV is not good. This is one instance where you could put the TV on the mantel since it is pretty low. You could maybe paint your fireplace bricks a warm white, as well as doing the same with the paneling (looks like paneling, or maybe wallpaper?) on the fireplace wall. I don't think the rug and coffee table are the big problems here although the floor is very busy, so you might do better with a solid or very small print rug. On the large wall near the front door, how about some type of a closet/armoire thing (unless you have a coat closet already). I think you need something kind of tall and imposing on that wall. If that is a closet, however, by the front door, maybe just some dramatic large art piece, even like a cool vintage poster. I think you could strive for a cool mid-century modern vibe if you like that. The throw is pretty with the rug color.

Smaller rug just for under coffee table would not work. I would get bigger wall art above the FP and create nice entrance way with console and décor above it.

Thank you tftz1006. I appreciate your input! Your suggestions are very useful. The TV is there temporarily because I’m working on the wires. I am planning on putting it above the mantel (but a little worried it will be high to watch. I’m also buying a bigger tv). Do you think that rug is an appropriate size for the space? I’ve been lazy about the curtains. They are left over from the staging when I bought the house.

Yes to a new rug - id say a lighter colour to brighten the space. keep the new rug the same size, but you could get s amaller square or rect. coffee table. i love the table behind the sofa in the entry way. I would add hooks on the wall between the door and window, and perhaps some art work above. And, another rug for this entry way is needed too! You could get lighter coloured curtains too and that would brighten the space. Be sure to hang the new curtains at the top of the wall. I have light grey curtians that are room darkening, Is your TV sitting in front of the fireplace? Is it an option to mount it above the FP?

I think ultimately the rug could be bigger, but maybe first figure out a way to get yourself some more seating space. If you don't love the couch, maybe sell it and aim for a smaller scale MCM couch and a couple of chairs. It doesn't look like there is any other place to put the tv since it appears you have a breakfast bar off to the left. Maybe don't mount the TV on the wall, just use the feet thingies with the tv to keep it as low as possible? Also you'll have to figure out some lighting but first the floor plan. You might also consider lightening the walls and painting the inside of your exterior door. I could see a color like White Dove looking very pretty here.

Miriamrose thank you for your input. Those are some great suggestions.

tfitz1006 Thank you! Your comments are so helpful. I need to keep the couch for now. Would it make sense to put it against the wall and put 2 chairs in its place?

    That could work!

While I like the thought of making a distinct entryway, i think you are using too much real estate for it. What if you had a small drop spot to the right of the door, had a taller piece opposite where the entry table is now.

can you have the couch face the window? Maybe two small scale chairs or a love seat where the couch is now?

Dana, thank you for your input. I agree it’s kind of wasted space. I basically placed the couch based on the size of the rug, regardless of the entryway. I think the room is too narrow to have the coach facing the window - there would be around 5 ft maybe a couple inches more between. I could have the couch on the window wall.

The sofa and rug need to be pulled back, closer to the door. And the sofa needs to be at least a foot away from the window, even better if it's 2 feet away with a narrow end table between sofa and window.

partim thank you for your input. I will certainly try moving the sofa back. I moved it up because the tv is only 32”. A new 55” tv is in the works. I could move the sofa out 1 ft from the wall, but that’s about it. Would probably need a 9x12 rug if I do move the sofa back

Here are my suggestions with minimal investment in mind:

    1. Put console table between two doorways.
    2. Move sofa back and away from the window.
    3. Place a small side table with a lamp between sofa and window.
    4. Mount a larger TV above the fireplace.
    5. Hang curtains higher (if possible, purchase longer curtains in a lighter color that is repeated in the rug or accessories).

Forgot to add: hang a large mirror above the console table to balance out the room.

Can't tell if sofa is charcoal in color? and curtains too?

Everdebz yes, both are charcoal. Recently completed a pandemic move. The charcoal sofa was purchased originally for a different space and the curtains are left over from the staging of this house. Figured I would nail down the layout, then the color palette and replace those

I understand, but have you mentioned considering chair/s? would one work with sofa perpendicular as it is now, at its side [not near stools]?

    like rug color and such:

How many feet from front edge of sofa to the tv?

Will you please post photo of the opposite wall area, as seen from the window?

Current rug seems almost right, cause it leaves fair amount to walk by.... you think?

So the kitchen is opposite the window

    Sorry forgot the pic

So the tv has to go on the "fireplace wall" somewhere?

Another measurement - what's width of units to each side of brick?

    The units are 48” wide

I think the tv does need to go either above the fireplace or to the left

I would put the sofa on the wall opposite the window, put the tv above the fireplace, paint the brick white, paint the door the color of the trim, take down the curtains.

And get a chair to put where the sofa is now? Maybe 2 if I get smallish ones. Eliminate the sofa table and get 2 small end tables? What about rug? Can’t go cream co,irked with black dogs. I always think a busier pattern will hold up better to wear

Amanda the kitchen is opposite the window, it’s not a huge room so that unfortunately isn’t possible

Does that sofa table fit in the entry? Your rug may work ok... hard to tell with the current arrangement. Move the chair to the spot where the sofa is now.

Ok, I see that now...have you tried putting the sofa in the window?

I have but would need additional seating where the sofa is now, for watching tv

Maybe put the sofa in the window and two chairs opposite the tv/fireplace place wall.

The sofa and table just look so heavy where they are now.

Amanda, thanks for your input. Just curious are you referring to the coffee table or the sofa table? The sofa table is really a desk and is there temporarily. The sofa is what it is. It wasn’t bought for the space and money is tight. I’m trying to make it work.
