I am thinking of buying this fridge so I looked at the reviews on some consumer website and someone else mentioned this same problem.

The other thing to know is that although it's supposed to be very quiet, it's not. In fact, for days after it was first installed I kept thinking the dryer was running all the way in another part of the house - it was that loud. I will definitely not go with this brand the next time around.

Mlrogo, my Liebherr fridge is extremely quiet, much quieter than our new SZ freezer.

That's interesting - I had Abs change the motor but that didn't help. I guess I was just used to my old GE.

I’m within a mouse click of buying the narrow 24” Liebherr fridge/freezer w/ ice maker. Have we reached a consensus about the noise factor (a dealbreaker in an 800sf pied-a-terre!)? It’s an attractive unit with high-end euro styling and most affordable. Do you recommend I buy Liebherr and pass on the ice-maker? Maybe shell out the extra for a sub-zero?

I had an Abt service call this week and they're replacing the entire ice maker. Apparently mine was broken. I feel like getting service answers is a little tricky for these bc they're less common than American brands. It still runs louder than my old GE though. I've gotten used to it.

I’m so glad to be warned of the potential of noise, as that’s one thing I’m very sensitive to. YES, repair calls are a pain with European products- the availability of certified repairman for the brand, more expensive parts, and the service calls themselves are more expensive (lack of competition).

I really do love the performance of SZ fridges. Agree that they are too darn expensive! Why can’t a competitor just copy part-to-part the SZ and make their own version? Does anyone know of a comparable fridge with European styling but with a Liebherr price tag?

My Liebherr was very quiet -- it was a 36"W French door counter depth with two pullout freezer drawers. At first we had a couple of problems with the icemaker that were fixed. I learned not to jam anything in the icemaker area that would interfere with the icemaker function.

If an icemaker keeps making ice and overflows it is obviously that the shutoff switch is broken and needs to be fixed - no one designs icemakers that way.

I sold the Liebherr with my house but I am going to guy one again after looking at the problems reported by some with Bosch and other refrigerators I was considering.

@bdslack Sounds like you are done after years of dealing with the Liebherr. I read your instructions for resetting the ice maker fill level in another thread and wanted to ask if you could help me understand the exact steps. We bought a loft with a LIebherr and reading through all comments and complaints on the condo building website from date of construction in 2008-09 I can see tons of problems with the doors - door handles constantly falling off, etc.

Ice makers of course are on the list as well and it appears that those who've not yet chucked their Liebherr to the curb have all had the ice maker replaced. We've only been here 3 years and previous owners replaced said problematic ice maker but the ice tray is beginning to crack a teensy bit. I removed it and reseated it on its brackets as it had fallen into the bin below :(

I understand that pressing the on/off button for 5-8 seconds will trigger the flashing light and the unit will cycle - rotating ice tray and dropping its contents and then rotating back and refilling. I did this step with the ice bin removed - it sounded as if that was how it works. At that point however I get confused about counting the flashing lights and how the number changes each time you open and close the ice bin. I wasn't sure if the number of flashes was increasing? I do want to do this properly to have as little water as possible enter so I am aiming for a "1" as you had suggested.
