Help me solve my rug dilemma

Hello! Looking for a little input here. I have two entrances in my kitchen, between the kitchen and the breakfast area. One comes from the back outside patio and one from the garage. They face each other. Since we have a dog, the back one is used multiple times a day. My husband hates the rugs because although they are 3” wider than the doors on each side he doesn’t think they come out far enough. So he must come inside and remove his shoes before he can shut the door if he doesn’t want to step with dirty shoes onto the wood floor. Because of the cabinet placement and the way the doors swing open you will never get additional space to the right or left of you. So what I am wondering is if I had one big rug that connected both entryways and completely covered the floor there...would that look weird? It completely goes against my instincts. Would I make it big enough to almost reach the breakfast table? I am fine with the way they are but he grumbles a lot about it and has said that he is going to go get a rug and I just can’t have that haha! We don’t have a mud room so these are the entrances that are used the most, no one ever uses the front door. 🙄 So...what do you think? I hope the pictures help present the problem.
