I would worry about those granites too. They were in every house built in the late 80's to late 90's. The house we bought in 2003, built in 1990 had the Luna pearl! The only one missing in your photo is Baltic Brown, another favorite of that era.

giallo ornamento is a nice granite, relative to the others anyway. You can pull from the griege/taupe / or biscuit in that. which is the darker cabinet option ? A wood look tile should come in various shades .

Amy, edit your post and add design dilemma as one of the picks (you can have 3) and kitchen too. You might get more feedback.

I’d revisit your budget and see if you can’t get to a low level quartz. You can update lighting later so maybe drop some fixtures (dining, kitchen pendants) to move money to counters. They can still wire for the areas, they just put a plastic plate over it. I’d Seriously figure out a way to pick a different counter. (Sorry if you’ve tried and can’t)

I'm assuming these are the options the builder is giving you? Engineered quartz should be about the same price as granite, if you go with a solid color. I might also go with a brighter white on the cabinets to make it cleaner looking and more up to date.

Thanks @alwayscold I do have that included. @Sabrina Alfin Interiors I don’t like the bright white in a kitchen. What other colors would be more classic? I loved the Divinity color as it seemed softer. I also don’t like gray. Appreciate the comments.

@herbflavor I had the giallo orn in Tx home, I liked it, was nice with the darker cabinets And lighter tile floor. I was hoping for a different look in our Florida home, with the Divinity cabinets.

I wasn’t sure if the same granite would work, wish I could see pics to help decide. Thanks

I agree with @chispa - Those granites were very popular in the 80's and 90's. IMO, ubatuba is way past it's useful life. I'd see if I could cut something else and get some additional choices.

If you’re not flexible on the cabinet color and those are your only granite choices, I would go with the black and then pick something not beige for the walls.

There is a darker cabinet option there, and a lighter white but I need to get the color names. Not sure What they are yet.

If this were my house I'd probably see if I could get them to install inexpensive laminate and credit me the cost of the granite, then replace the laminate on my own with the stone of my choosing.

So, this is what we did when we built almost 5 years ago... we took the most basic granite that was offered by our builder, which I think was the middle back option in your pic, and had it installed. We paid nothing extra for it. When we were ready to redo the kitchen to our liking, we sold the countertops and got what we wanted. Just a thought because you’re paying for those basic countertops.

If that’s not an option, I‘d forgo something else like upgraded light fixtures, faucets, whatever and get the counter of your choice if you can. You can always replace light fixtures, faucets and other things like that down the road.

I see two cream shades of painted doors..or is it showing the two styles , both in a cream paint. then a third brown stained door. Hands down I'd take the brown stained door/ it's not that dark. . giallo ornamento counter ..but try a bit lighter floor...where are those? . Lighter backsplash/pretty hardware , you'll be fine. A couple glass doors for a wall cabinet, if they will allow???

We had black granite in the kitchen before, you could see all the dust and crumbs and I would have to re-wipe the counters after my husband wipes them because he left streaks. And I did them twice when i cleaned, once to clean them and a second to remove the cleaner residue that you don't realize is there until you have black counters. I think it is interesting to go with formica and get a credit however my experience is add ons cost quite a bit and dropping an item never amounted to much. Only had success when I didn't use an allowance and got that credit. One time I wanted to add a recessed light in an area and it was $150. Later I dropped a light from the plan - zero credit. When we pushed back he offered us a sandwich. Asshat.

Quartz comes in other colors than white. Also if I had to choose Id pick the New Caledonia. Luna Pearl in some lights can read with some hint of beige but its not really there. Though grey is a neutral and I love grey and beige together. Good luck! Be sure to update your post later with what you went with!

@alwayscold this made me laugh, wish you could see our faces when we learn what is optional and the costs for each thing, I think my hubby wants to explode sometimes. Especially when you know there is barely any difference in price or the best colors are several levels up, come on! But I appreciate what you’ve shared about black countertop, I thought of this, too. Would drive me crazy to see dust all the time. I will let you know what we choose. Take care.

We echo your, “wish you could see our faces” comment. Finding out builder grade even in $250 sq ft range is awful. We have a running joke here...you like that door they ask, why yes we say....you want it to open and close....that will be an upgrade....

@Amy10 N, I have Taj Mahal quartzite. I think that having a light colored counter and backsplash makes the biggest difference in how light/dark a kitchen feels, more so than the color of the cabinets.

so: Divinity white is more your cabinet pick based on your quest for a change. Florida now..etc: Divinity cab, santa cecillia counter and how bout a soft green/maybe slight teal tint tile backsplash. Can you pick your own backsplash/hardware?

Sharing as I have giallo orn with cabs that are sandstone with a very light gray wash/distress around the moldings. It is very light and barely noticeable actually. hardware is pewter. The cab color does pull yellow some but I rather like them. Photos were taken on an overcast day With just natural light. Our floors are white oak with special walnut stain and walls are SW gossamer veil If you are looking for reference and how it all goes together. Good luck!

@herbflavor thanks, we bought a spec home last time which had lighter floor tile, beautiful, we just always wanted wood looking floors, and not the light wood colors. We moved back to Florida and now want to get the color flooring we prefer, it is open concept so has to work with kitchen, dining, great room, too. I really liked the Divinity white cabinets and even the other white is ok, just did not care for stark or pure white. Not entirely opposed to darker wood cabinets but everytime I saw a kitchen with offwhite cabinets and wood floors, I thought it looked pretty classic. I like your back splash idea. If they don’t have an option there, my husband will do that. There isn’t much to do. Hardware, I am getting oil rubbed bronze fixtures, lights, door knobs, they had many standard options at the design center for pulls, etc.

Glad to help! I will suggest a simpler backsplash though ... we are changing ours to fog arabesque or simple subway-if I can find the right griege color! Not a lot of searching for it yet though!

That is very pretty @lbk01. I will choose a solid backsplash. They had a few options on that.

@lbk01 if you are checking out HD and Lowe’s they are resetting their selections and have quite a few new coming soon signs up. Amazing to me how long those stores had basic boring selections and ignored trends to then finally get with it and now have some great selections.

I suggest you look more forward in your design choices rather than what was popular a decade or two ago. Those busy granites are way past their prime and will make a new house look old fashioned. The same with ORB-it had its popularity for a time that has now passed. Things are classic for a reason, you can’t go wrong simple white shaker style cabinets, chrome, nickel or even black faucets.

For anyone interested, went with adonis white granite, and earthy subway tile backsplash with the divinity cabinets. Interior walls will be SW accessible beige. Love it! Now am reviewing our exterior home colors....fun stuff. Thanks for all feedback. Hope everyone is well.
