i think you need a bigger/thicker mantel, and to either get rid of that fire screen entirely (if it's not going to be used) or paint it black instead of brass.

i like the red brick, though.

I have a similar fireplace and found the following blog. I did the painting of the brass and it was so easy! Only took a couple of hours. I didn't use the spray paint but a can and brush. Getting rid of the brass makes a huge difference.

Yes if you can remove that glass screen it would be cool. I had a local blacksmith make a fire screen with tempered glass for me (California had T-24 Energy Code) and it turned out great! I like the brick and the mantel!! But depending on your overall design theme, some of my customers put a "plaster wash" over the brick to lighten up or add an old world rustic feel! Whatever Works!!

Kevin , do you have any picture of "plaster wash"? I want to get rid of the screen, but i still wanna use the fireplace With fire log for look , not heating.This brick just looks tired to me:)

Your fireplace is very massive. Painting it would make a great improvement and is a quick fix. The mantel could be painted a different color so it stands out from the brick, and you could add additional wood down the sides to define your fireplace better. Once you decide what color you want your brick, choose a new color to upgrade your brass. I would not pick black. I am so tired of the big dark fireplaces that stand out in out homes. There are so many great products that will work for high heat conditions, made especially for your fireplace.

You might be able to put a new fireplace insert in that self-ventilates; then frame it with wood, allowing you to cover up those holes on each side.

I'll probably make someone gasp in horror, but I'd paint the brick, especially if this was going in my bedroom. It would make it feel fresher and cleaner to me. Also, I'd change out mantle for a nice thick slab of wood and leave it natural. Get rid of brass firescreen.

If you go to houzz.com interior photos then type in "white wash" brick you will see some pics! All of this depends on the "look" you are going for: "formal vs rustic"! I like it when some brick color broadcasts thru the finish. More of a urban loft feel?

I like the white wash look, but I'm not sure how to do it. Should i paint the mortar first , than use sponge? Delute a water based paint?

Painting over the brick would be a good idea, if this is going to be your bedroom. You could fill op the brick with a small layor of cement (plaster) and then paint in a white or off white. Hire a mason builder, or visit Pinterest for DIY projects.

A weider wood shelf all around the fireplace would be practical, and soften the brick look. Add some art decor and maybe a bio fireplace if you want to make the lighting up more easy.
