Same color or paint it white.

Is this an unfinished basement? I ask because I would never paint a finished basement ceiling black. If you think that will hide pipes and water lines think again. What happens is the spiders love the nice darl ceiling and you will be fighting spider webs constantly. Black painted ceilings are okay in aloft where the ceiling is 15-20 feet in the air. As for the stairs again why black risers that will show every bit of dust. What is the flooring in the basement?

Patricia Yes the ceiling will be an open ceiling. We know we will still see every pipe and duct that exists up there. I'm not concerned about spiders... Lol. The basement walls are getting completely redone with drywall and we will be blocking off a section of our basement (the area with laundry, water heater, etc). Black risers because why not? I definitely do not want white and the gray doesn't do a very good job of hiding stuff either. Our basement will be used for playing pool, listening to music and having drinks with family. We want a cool, chill place. We don't want it to look like a living room, ya know?

What do you think of adding riser strips with some grey to compliment treads and it will be interesting and feel a lot lighter.

Had a thought about the black ceiling, if you don’t mind. Be sure you want a cave like feel and could feel overwhelming

Maureen, interesting about the riser strips. I'll look into those! We aren't really concerned about the ceiling. It is an older house so we don't really want to lose the few inches we would have by adding an actual ceiling. We already have a plan to light it. We want the industrial feel and the darkness as most times we will be down there in the evening, with lights and music going. :) Thanks for the advice!

Love Maureen’s idea of pattern risers. I think that will add the depth you want without it being overwhelmingly dark.
