I would start with a rug that you love, and then add an oversized piece of art on the long wall. Find something with color and texture - right now you have all hard surfaces. Can you change the light fixture? Also - I would relocate the ladder. It seems odd in a dining area.

If. you can narrow your color palette first, that might save time and money down the road. If this were my space, I'd look online for a mirror or a collection of mirrors that would reflect light from the nearest window. A set of botanical prints are classic and light, and you can buy the prints online and then buy the frames on Amazon or at Target. I agree with Sammie that you need rug and a new light fixture. I'm thinking if you want a cottage look that gold frames might not work. Look at thrift shops or Habitat for humanity stores for ceiling fixtures. Then check out the amazing YouTube videos demonstrating how to spray paint old fixtures into gorgeous new pieces. Wow!

Add area rug, side table with lamp, wall art, window mirror, maybe change overhead light fixture, and paint walls green-blue-grey color to complement wood floors.
