How can I update this kitchen?

Hi! we just bought our dream home. We will be installing granite countertops and will be changing the flooring. I want to paint the cabinets white/ ivory. Any tips on cabinet painting? Also any ideas for linear kitchen island lighting ? Thank you :)

I would add a crown to the top of the cabinets, add a backsplash, and cabinet hardware. If you wanted to stick with only one light over the island, west elm has a lot of good options... https://www.westelm.com/products/sculptural-4-light-globe-pendant-clear-w3798/?pkey=call-ceiling-lighting just depends on budget

Thank you so much :) I’ll consider a backsplash too!

Those top cabinets look shallow - I wouldn’t spend $$ painting them but replacing them to be actually functional

Your kitchen is pretty and fairly up-to-date.

The only obviously "dated" items are:

    1. The light fixture(s) over the island

    2. The backsplash (that little 2 or 4 inch thing that comes up the wall from the countertop is a backsplash).

Lighting is easy to change (usually).

Depending on the material, it may be easy to remove the backsplash you have and to add a full backsplash.

Add hardware if you like it for functionality (I do!), but you can live without it.

Thank you! I really appreciate this. I HATE this space too so Maybe a whole remodel is a good idea. In your experience how much do you think it will cost? The appliances are dated but I can live with them.

It is all about your budget and how much you want to / can do. (I agree waiting a couple months.) If you have $40-50K then have someone design it, gut it and start from scratch. If not, and you have $5-$10K, then it is an update and redirection of the eye. In that case, i would minimize the amount of wood by paint the cabinets and taking some down and add open shelves to lighten the space. As noted new fixture, maybe tile on the island in the kickplate area. You have options. Have fun. You have a great kitchen and it will become fabulous!

Have you already ordered the granite? If not, I would agree with those who say to wait until you're ready for a complete remodel. Dream house + dream kitchen! For the lighting, perhaps have two or three simple pendants installed right over the island?

    Would NOT paint cabinets.

Would change wall color, lighting, and backsplash.

We might suggest looking at adding hardware to the cabinets, updating the lighting, and removing the 4" backsplash and then adding in your own backsplash. Here are a few kitchen designs of ours to help aid you with this particular dilemma.

I would not paint the cabinets... there are just too many of them. It will be expensive and not worth the cost. You could just paint the island. Navy blue would work. I would remove the cabinets over the refrigerator...they just emphasize that the refrigerator is protruding. You could install open shelving there.

I would want a more functional kitchen before I'd slap granite on top. You've got no drawer bases, for starters. Live in the kitchen for a while, to see what works and doesn't work for you, and study the "New to Kitchens? Read me First" thread in this forum. Plan, plan, plan, then create your dream kitchen.

Overall, it’s a nice large space. I know it’s trendy right now to rip out desks from kitchens but I would love to have one!
