What is on the other side of the wall above the stairwell that the photo faces?

There's a bedroom behind that wall, the same that is behind the left-side wall. you can see the entrance of this bedroom in the picture. Nothing behind the right-side wall though.

I really can't imagine storage looking good or being functional in that space. how close do you get to the downstairs ceiling when walking under it? would a tall person smack their head if you added a shelf or cabinet there? or even if it's really tall, how would you reach the storage w/o a scary ladder situation?

I'd just hang some tall art there and call it a day.

If you need extra storage: what kinds of items do you need to store, maybe we can help you out. what's under your stairs? or above your closets? (we have these huge empty cavities above our closets so that's why I ask.) do you have a yard or patio where you could put outdoor storage?

My dad's house has same setup but for stairs to basement and he put a shelf up in that area, I wouldn't like it for regular stairs to 2nd floor but works fine for basement

We might recommend you try just hanging some lovely artwork up there and also if need be add a runner to the hallway.
