It depends on how you want to use it. In our previous house the walkout basement was not immediately finished. I went to a flooring store and purchased a very large carpet remnant. Because it was a dark color not really desirable to a lot of people it was pretty inexpensive. It was perfect for our needs.

We put it in the part of the basement used by our children to play. This gave them a softer surface for their play area. When we finished the basement a few years later we gave it to a neighbor for their unfinished basement. No one cared about the barely visible stains from crayons or spilled juice.

@rrah, Thanks for sharing your insight. I have similar need. How did you separated utilities from rest of the area ? so that young kids can run around safely.

I spent several winters finishing ours. So that it had a respectable appearance, the concrete walls were painted and some posters mounted. Sealed the concrete floor and positioned area rugs. Pretty dust free then.

@Kashish Singh Put wall around the utilities by enclosing them with an access panel where needed or a door with child safety door handle lock. Make sure combustion air vents installed to meet the code compliance.
