How do you find the hostas you’re looking for?

Like all of you I have purchased hostas from Naylors, Land of the Giants, Hornbakers, the Hosta Store and so on. I purchased quite a few $$ today, but there are a number I cannot find. Been looking for Lemon Love Note, Pandora, Tatoo, Strawberry Banana Smoothie and others. How do you find difficult to find hostas? What am I missing??

Debra, you look it up on the http://hostaregistrar.org/. This is the official registry for hosta. It describes the hosta and tells you who entered the data and who originated the plant. It will sometimes tell you who sells it.

There is also a group of folks who breed hosta. It's hostafiles or hostabreeders or something like that. I'll have to think about it and do some searches. I've had a glass of wine (or two) and can't think of them at this moment. I'll post the group's website tomorrow. Most of the breeders will sell their own introductions, but they are sometimes difficult to find.

pandora.. and not pandoras box???

pb is notoriously hard to grow ... and i SUSPECT as out sellers dwindle ... you might find it hard to find sellers who are going to waste space on carp plants ... but thats just speculation ...

the hunt is a big part of the game ... and good luck with that ... i had plant on my wish list for years ...

also.. there is always the delay for the newest and brightest of plants ... sometimes delayed by TC problems ... etc ...

and then there is the shopping in the library and wanting things that arent really in the trade ...

just various reasons why you may never get what you want... wait.. was that a song???

There are a lot of hostas that aren't available. Occasionally, I've come across a nursery that has some that are difficult to find but usually they just aren't available anywhere. With far fewer sellers now, I'm sure that this issue is going to become a lot more prevalent. My go to place, Wade & Gatton is gone and several local nurseries only have very popular hostas and don't have any less common plants for sale. As mentioned above, I first try the originator. Casita Azul says they have Strawberry Banana Smoothie in stock but I've never shopped there. Try Solberg and see if he has any.

How do you know what the originator is?

I know you go to the Compare Hosta Library Pictures site Debra. At the top left corner click on My Hosta Database Info after selecting say for eg. Lemon Love Note. In that case it is Doug & Mardy Beilstein 2017.

Don't go there unless you want to see more hard to find Hostas (and some not).

Deb, I just looked on American Hosta Growers hostafinder and found Strawberry Banana Smoothie ($30) and Lemon Love Note ($20) - both at Uniquely Hostas in Elroy, WI 608-462-4662 www.uniquelyhostas.com I am just assuming you are in Wisconsin from your login name. Lemon also shows up at four other locations across the country. (N. Carolina, Illinois, New Hampshire, and Iowa) Pandora came up but no location. It is nice that it also gives the prices at each location. Best to you on completing your wish list. Hope the hip is healing well.

Diane, thanks for the info..... I did eventually buy Lemon Love Note from Uniquely Hostas (I am in Wisconsin). I didn’t order the SBS because I had ordered a similarly colored hosta from another site. But, down the road===>>when Steve decides to had to his list again, I could be tempted........ hahahaha
