Your architect is the culprit for the awkwardness. He needs to fix the home design that is creating the problem.

Do you plan to have an island which is 17' x 5.5'?

I am open to whatever could potentially work, but preferably not one that size!

I couldn't find an exact plan so our architect is helping us piece it together. He has given several other options, but we haven't found an exact fit.

You are not working with an architect. You are working with a drafter. Good design comes from good designers. That is not good design.

Its architecture, not a game of Tetris. You should go to your architect with a list of wants and needs, site plan and maybe a bubble diagram. What you are doing is handcuffing a draftsperson.

Thank you both. I'm seeing if there is a better design I should mention to him. Like move the entry way or push in the kitchen wall from front porch, etc.

How much of the 32' are you allotting for the kitchen?

Is this the only Dining Room? If so, be sure you have allocated enough room to fit a decent size table and chairs with enough room around them for movement as well as b/w the Kitchen and the table (5' minimum if there's seating at both the table and the side of the island facing the table). If it's just a "nook", i.e., a small table will do, then you will be able to use more for the Kitchen.

However, don't create a Kitchen that requires roller skates to get around. (I.e., don't make it so big that distances between work zones are too large.) Check out the Best Practices/Guidelines in the New to Kitchens thread I posted above.

Yes this is the only dining room.

26 feet for kitchen. We extended the kitchen passed the 32 feet.

Is that a support column between the kitchen and great room?
