You don't need a rug. If you get one, either get one that is big enough for the largest version of the table or plan to take the rug up when you expand the table (which will be a pain!).

Are you planning any type of draperies or blinds? That might skew my answer...but as the room is now, I would add a rug IF you can fit the correct size so that the chairs fit when pulled back and it doesn't sit too close to the walls.

We would have to order a custom rug, which would leave about 8” around the edges. This would allow 2’ around the table at its largest possible dimension. So it’ll be fine when it’s big, but is that weird when it’s smaller?

We do not plan to do more than minimalist Duettes in this space. We want the views to be center stage (hard to tell in a winter pic, but looks out over 12 acres and the summer view is glorious). There is a large window seat behind the table, for which I will have a custom cushion made, but largely in neutral colors as it’s going to be very expensive and I will not want to redo it often!

Our home is simple, clean, functional, with a moody neutral palette and some grayish blue accents.

Oh! I will add some throw pillows on the bench, too, for color and texture. I’m not a big fan of bold colors, but I love textures!

I would not add a rug. I think they can look glorious but are an utter pain in the backside to vacuum. I think it looks great as is.

The view is pretty great in the winter too! That's a beautiful space, and I think with all the hard surfaces that a rug would be a plus both acoustically and visually. However - it looks like just out of view on the left you have a door to your deck. Will you be able to bypass the rug coming in and walking through the room? If not, you might find yourself with a dirty path on your new rug, So choose your pattern/color wisely if you foresee that being an issue.

L.D. Yes, you are observant! We do have a small deck out there, mostly for grilling, so it is a concern. I was thinking a neutral wool-sisal or wool-jute blend with a mix of colors to hopefully help offset those issues, but you are right, that one corner will get some decent traffic.

A S, my dining rooms have always had wall-to-wall carpet, so I guess I’m kinda used to the vacuum challenges, honestly, vacuuming it without a rug is no picnic, either!

I agree with you. Texture, a little pattern, would look nice.

(another option is to hit up a carpet store w/rolls of remnants. have it cut to the size you want and have them bind the edges. )

I agree. I’d love to see texture. Does it have to be thru a rug no. Can it. Sure!! I don’t think it’ll be the biggest pain. And you can even roll it up and store away in the summer grilling months. I’d also consider maybe a wallpaper to add texture. And yes to some pillows. Great space!!

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I guess it sounds like I can do whatever I want, which is a lucky place to be. We have hardly used that space, but we have literally all of our families within a half hour drive, so we hope to have lots and lots of family gatherings someday!! That’s the big reason I insisted on a separate, yet connected dining space. Everyone takes shoes off in MN, and I guess I like the idea of my guests not having feet on bare floors.

I try to keep imagining the time when family gatherings can resume - I need that hope! My 80-something parents got their first vaccine today, so maybe then can come for dinner soon!!
