What about wood/butcher block for the island? I have John Boos Butcher Block stained walnut on my island. Love it. Easy up keep. Having a design behind the stove is dated and removing the old countertops may damage the tile so a new backsplash is a good idea

Your cabinets appear to be two toned ( at least on my screen). If so, think I would opt for a granite or quartz or marble that has a Crema Marfil type of coloration to blend the lower and uppers. I would leave the cherry wood on island and use the same counter there as well. I would leave the backsplash and simplify the mural.

Replacing the countertops on both, and the backsplash would be a great update. It's hard to tell if your cabinets are cream or off-white. Post a picture of the cherry island and one of the room from farther back.

If you are changing the countertops, I would change the backsplash too.

You already dislike the mural, and the backsplash is likely to get damaged when the countertops come out. So I would bid the backsplash a fond farewell.

I would consider a dark (almost black) look for the countertops. That would look good on the white cabinets and on the cherry (don't paint that for color -- you're just trading one color for another). Then you will be able to do almost anything you want on the backsplash.

Of course, the white quartz would work too, but I would do it on the island too. You have a small kitchen, and if the island is different from the counters, then the countertops need to all be the same. Again, almost anything you are likely to love would work with the white on white look.

You could even do a white subway (white on white on white) and go bold and colorful with your accessories (mixer, tea kettle, canisters, towels). When you get bored of one color, you can always switch those things out relatively painlessly. If you have the storage space, you can even use your red things for a while, and then switch over to blue when you get bored with red, and then switch back!
