I'm sure you certainly can.
We grow them in containers here in northern California, 8a, we just have to bring them in for a few months during the Winter. We have several going right now, which we've been regrowing from tops for about 7 years now. Harvesting a pineapple when it is actually ripe is the best!

I have several in the ground here, also started from tops. I'm further south, tho.

You can certainly pot the tops up and they will grow - they're dead easy.

9b/9a here. Sure you can. Have a plan for cold freezing nights. Mine all grow under hug oak trees- dappled sun/shade and safe from most frosty nights.

Super easy plant to grow. The hardest part is keeping critters from getting to them as they mature. They even test bite the fruit as they mature. Some of my plants are several years old and are still producing. Some now have double or triple trunks.

For Linda Leaf: I've wracked my brain but cannot figure out how 5 gallon buckets with lots of holes in the bottom help keep critters from your pineapples! Do you put the buckets *over* the plants at night?

A 5 gallon bucket would be no challenge at all for my possums or raccoons-- some of the latter must weigh 30 pounds! They rear up and hiss at me if I interrupt their dining.

Mine are in dappled sun because they're in pots and I don't water them regularly, so full sun in summer would dry them out too much.

Photos from Hawaii show them in the ground in full sun. Probably have irrigation and cooler breezes to keep them cooler.
