Kitchen Design Help

We are starting a kitchen redo --- new off-white inset cabinets, gray/green/blue painted island, off white backsplash, Calcutta Gold Quartz counters. We plan to replace the cooktop with a 36'' gas cooktop and 42" vent hood and plan to beef up the island and move the fridge 18" to the right. The current layout works well, although I am debating whether to go with a microwave/speed oven and convection wall oven combination to replace our old double ovens or a 36" convection/gas cooktop. I would then put the microwave and a warming drawer in the island. The reason for doing so would mainly be aesthetics, as I no longer love looking at the double ovens. I would then be able to extend the island another 6" to the left. I would also probably add some open shelving on that oven/angled wall to give the plan some dimension. Thoughts?

@jenniferc Looks like a lovely plan. Lots and lots of cabinets. Great idea to have a vent hood rather than the dreadful microwave that just moves air around but never removes the grease. I bet you might prefer the microwave in the island in a drawer giving you more counter space for buffet diners or counter space. I know I would prefer that option.

Are you updating lighting ? Under cab lighting? Do you want any lighted cabinets?

How much space between the island and the range? I ask only because if someone is at the sink chopping vegetables is there space enough for the cook working at the cook top range? Does the kitchen open to another room or is this all in one room? Any windows?

    Are you keeping the floors?

I am sure better minds with kitchen design talent will chime in to give you thoughts and solutions.

I think this is a well thought out design and space. You really do know what your doing. The only complaint I have is the left side looks very congested. Are you having a walk in pantry? Can you? Would you? I think that would be a great place for appliances and storage and will give you an airier look.

This is the Area I’m talking about...

You have a lot of cabinets. I would move the microwave to a built in shelf on one of the upper cabinets instead of breaking up your counter with the tall tower. Also consider using extra tall cabinets instead of regular height cabinets with the tiny ones above. The small ones just aren't functional, and it looks too busy. I love my 48" upper cabinets.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. We have a very open floor plan with lots of windows. I plan to keep the floors. There is 54” between the cooktop/range and sink so should be ok. I have considered adding glass front cabinets with lighting to break things up. Those tall cabinets to the far left will be our pantry. Can’t do a walk-in. I agree that we have tons of cabinets. I may switch some out for open shelving to break it up visually but not sure where to put them. Just can’t decide on a range or wall oven combo. Good point about the micro/speed oven breaking up counter space.

    Good plan overall.

One thought...unless you have a specific reason for those cabinets, I would convert as many as possible to drawers. Drawers are more functional.

Are the pantry cabinets 24" wide each or 36"? If 36", have considered a 72" reach-in pantry instead? It would be more functional and hold more storage than the cabinets. If you only have 48", it's a toss up. I would probably still want a reach-in pantry, but that would be up to you. I just know that I would not want to open/close all those drawers & doors and/or have to move stuff around while looking for something that wasn't put away where it was supposed to be.

It might also break up the "wall of tall" on that side.

Good point, Buehl! I had not thought of opening all of those pantry doors. The pantry cabinets are 30” each. We actually are replacing a 60” reach-in pantry thinking the cabinets style would look more updated and custom. Here is another iteration. Do you like this any better?
