I need pictures a floor plan , something to make me understand what you want to do. Staircases take up a huge amount of space so what do you need the attic for?

Very crude pictures and even more crude drawing of the room. We have a double bed in there now. This room sits behind the fireplace in the picture. I have included the entry way picture and the shot peaking into the room. To the left of this room is a bedroom. You can see the door to the left of entry way. My mock up says 57” behind chimney from door to end of room. 72” across and 91” by the windows. The architect claims it can be done but I’m just trying to do a little more research before plopping down more money for further drawings. We hope to use it as a master bedroom. I don’t understand. Is your idea to creat a door to an attic stairs to the left of the fireplace and against that wall? Will you access in the same location as your pull down stairs? Are you planning on building a wall to separate the stairs from the room behind the fireplace? Is there a dormer above this room for headroom at the top of your stairs?? Why do you need a stairs? The room behind the fireplace will be much reduced in size...

We would like to finish our attic but currently only have the pull down ladder. So we were hoping to build the stairs in that little room using the whole room for the staircase so that we could access the attic. We don’t want to move the fireplace or take away from bedroom to the left or the front porch which is to the right. If staircase was built in that room, we would not have a door there. We would enter that room, pivot to the right and that is where the stairs begin. I was just looking for examples of tucked away staircases like that .

As mentioned already, the roof slope will determine where, the orientation, and if, your stairs can be placed there (not exactly following layout). Also, capturing space of an attic requires more than a stair. Light+ventilation/emergency rescue, floor joists that will support the bedroom (not just sized for ceiling joists), and HVAC which can be difficult in some houses.

Spiral staircases are the worst. I’d re-think that plan right away. How do you get furniture up there? Think about trying to carry a laundry basket while navigating the stairs.

We did consult an architect and for some reason I’m unable to post the drawing that we have paid for. So now my question is, would you trust the architect or should I consult an engineer? We have never done any major renovations so just wondering where to begin so we don’t waste too much on drawings. We have had a couple of contractors come through as well and they are so busy I can’t get much information from them.
