How has your winter been?

last modified: 5 years ago

Pretty average-mild winter here except for February, which has been cold. We're not out of the woods yet, and it will still get cold, but the with the sun getting higher in the sky it's beginning to feel more like spring than winter :)

As far as I can tell I've lost no trees. Everything seems to be alive, but you never know for sure til you can see the buds swell. Think my raspberries are doing much better than last year. I have an apple tree that I built a greenhouse around and it seems very healthy.LOL!

How about you?

10 days of nasty weather has most likely damaged my marginal trees and I will be removing them, other wise a decent winter so far. This week a lot of snow is going to melt.

What trees do you think got damaged, Wayne?

The Bristlecone pine are turning yellow and I think the red oak, sugar maple, red maple and shagbark hickory will die back to the ground. The Lord Selkirk sugar maple may be ok. One Ponderosa pine that I got the fall before last looks to be yellowing, I suspect the provinence of this one is from a mild area as I have another 7' that has no issues. The same goes for the Bristle cone.

It got pretty damn cold for you guys for quite a while. I’ve dodged the bullets so far, but they could definitely still get me.

my butternut seedlings seem to be very healthy. I’m stoked about that

Wow. Look at this snow coming to Denver. Lane are you guys getting it? They are saying Cheyenne might have their biggest snowfall in history. Thing are getting real nice here. Tons of sunny days lately and no wind. Super nice the next 10 days. Two really cold weeks this winter and that was about it. I was having a fire on Christmas Day outside with my wife sitting on lawn chairs and it was around 10c or 50f if I remember correctly. Looks like my weeping european willow is flowering now and it was supposed to be zone 4 but it handled below -40. Its a salix caprea pendula. I'm super excited for it to be the first one to flower ahead of everything else here in March. My ponderosa pines look good after their first winter. I have no doubt they will fit into my yard nicely. I just needed a good seed source and I got it. They were from a guy who grew them in Sherwood Park which is a suburb of Edmonton.

Hey Wayne. Thats too bad that you got some seed source that isn't hardy. All of those grow in Edmonton and aren't you in a warmer area if I remember than Edmonton? I saw a nice bristlecone pine in Calgary a month ago.

Yeah, I'm supposed to get snow. At first they said 3.5 ft of snow, then 2.5, then 2 now it's 18 inches, so yeah, they do a great job of getting everyone hot and bothered then inevitably it's nothing close to what they were calling for. I hope it's a lot because things have been very, very dry this winter

Well I saw Colorado's fires and I'm assuming you guys were dry too. Alot of places are dry these days. Boston is having their driest March in 100 years right now. Winnipeg is insanely dry. We had way less snow than usual.

Plant Love, about the same as Sherwood Park, yes it sucks.

Where did you buy them? Wow do we have a nice March coming still here. I think we might break the all time average March high for the whole month. Every time I look at temps, they get higher. Today is the only average day for the next ten and then its all above 10c or 50f with a 15c planned for a week from now or 60f.

This last storm was the real deal. The forecasters got one right!

Our winter was pretty weird. Mild up until Christmas, then cold, then really mild January and into February. Then we got WINTER! That lasted a few weeks and now March has been relatively mild, though it's cold right now but that's not supposed to last. We didn't get much snow this winter and it's melting fast. The dryness is a real concern.

Well, there's supposed to be a heinous stretch of weather coming up for the Rockies and the Midwest of the USA. Ma nature has been cruel the past 2-3 years

+18C Saturday then downward with rain then snow and below freezing for next week, we need the moisture though.

Yes, we're getting that too - we're having our March weather now. But, as Wayne said, we need the moisture here too so we can't complain mcuh!

Supposed to have8-10 more days of days with high temps in the 30s. Icky

It depends, the first part of the decade tough, the middle part better warmer less snow, last couple of years colder, wetter, and more snow.

I did a bit of a double take when L Clark said highs in the 30s! I forgot you were in the States!

So, this week, it was winter on Tuesday, spring-ish on Wednesday, summer yesterday and back to winter today. It's my fault - i bought a greenhouse.

Nice Marcia. April is always a rollercoaster. I have a big greenhouse that is almost ready to fill with plants
