For those building . . .10mil plastic under the floor is your best step. Used to be 6mil. which I've had no problems with.

And better yet, 1"-2" of foam board insulation under the concrete to keep the floor warmer in cold climates.

I've used low-pile synthetic carpet glued-down. Avoid underpads, which will absorb the inward bound moisture and encourage mold growth.

Sj...our experience exactly. our basement floor in our first house was sealed when we built the house. When, after many years we wanted to use tile there and finish the basement we were told the floor would have to be grinded. As an alternative our tile layers said they could use a type of glue on the floor, come back and lay the tile.

unfortunately the glue was an outdoor only adhesive. We had an explosion in the basement that burned our house.

be very sure you really want to seal the basement floors.

The tile guys were in the driveway ready to leave when it happened. Fumes built up....The fire department said if they had still been in the basement that they would have been bringing them out in body bags. I tend to be overly cautious now.
