Were the tubers from supermarket tubers?

Sweet potato flowers are scarce in our latitude. If you get some, try to hand pollinate for seed... there are amateur breeders I know who would be interested in it.

The purple/purple one was from Trader Joes. The others, both orange flesh, were commercial slips, but I lost the labels. Either Wilma, Amish Bush, Georgia jets or Beauregard. I lean toward the first two but cannot tell which is which...

The purple one set a massive bed of vines last summer and yielded some decent tubers, too. The others much shorter vines, and actually fewer tubers but some nice ones, although nothing huge; so I discount Georgia Jet and Beauregard. It is not the purple one that is showing flower buds. I tend to think it is the Amish, since Wilma grows scranty vines according to what I read and what I saw last summer, and the variety setting buds is the more vigorous of the two.

IIRC I got my starts from Sand Hills Preservation two years ago. This is my second year starting my own slips from my own saved tubers.

I will be ordering some slips from Sand Hill this year, for a small trial. The only sweet potatoes I've grown here so far were an Asian variety grown for their edible shoots. The long, twisted white tubers were up to a foot deep (into the rocky clay) and up to 3' away in any direction. It was hide-and-seek with a pick axe. :-0 I've chosen varieties which supposedly develop tubers directly below the plant.

Definitely agree to chose varieties that tend to develop right below the main plant. Same for Irish potatoes. My purples vined out into a bed fully 15 feet across last summer. The two orange varieties were a whole lot tamer. But the tubers I found were all right under the planting point in all three varieties. That makes things a whole lot easier.

BTW I found flower buds on a second variety. If I can get blooms at the same time, I will try cross pollination. This is all under lights; hopefully I will get something to play with. Morning glory seed is said to live for 50 years and I know that actual morning glories reseed themselves voraciously. I see no reason sweet potatoes should have fragile seed. The key will be getting any to start with.

I got white fly and the cuttings didn't take to the treatment very well. But I did get two blossoms on one of them. That looks like about all there will be though.
