Appliance Ordering - When and Where?

Hoping to start my kitchen reno mid next month and to try to time everything out is torture! I will be getting a full suite of appliances, fridge, DW, range and micro hood. My choices locally are limited, the 2 big box stores, plus a smaller local place that I haven’t checked out yet, but likely their options are limited. Soooo, two things:

  1. how has availability been lately? I was at Lowe’s the other day and they are now posting ‘anticipated ship dates’ on all their major appliances. I just have never had good luck with them despite their promises. My concern is that I have very limited storage space and I can’t accommodate storing a full suite of appliances if my kitchen isn’t ready to accept them. Timing is everything.
  2. I have seen a thread on here about AJ Madison, and WOW talk about some polar opposite opinions! I had never heard of them until I was researching appliance reviews on Consumer Reports and CR uses AJM for price comparisons. Any other ideas/sources for appliances, and what is the final verdict on AJM?

I would try to support a small local place. What do you mean by their option are limited? Sure, they probably can't display every model out there, but most small shops can order many things they can't keep in inventory. I would check with them and find out what they can or can't get, then maybe make a trip to a bigger town that will have more displays for you to look at and choose from, then order from your local store.

A friend recently waited 4 months after she moved in to get her GE Cafe fridge. Luckily she had a long term relationship with the appliance store. so they loaned her an older fridge to put in her garage. Better to pay for a few weeks of storage than have to wait months for an appliance!

do you know what you want or are you still deciding? Does the Reno include cabinets and countertops or just replacing appliances? That would be a start for better advice

I would look at the local guy first and see what they carry. They may have some good choices. In general, they can be competitive on price as well. The advantage is that they are close and if there are any issues they would be literally right there. The big box folks are ok as well, but they have what they have. The customer service can be OK but not great

AJ Madison and the like are selling pretty much everything and have attractive prices. There is pretty much low customer service given and that can be big when there are issues - dents, late deliveries etc

I would look at all options and see what the total, delivered price is. The appliance price is one thing, the delivered in the door is another

We saved about 10% buying from a local dealer over Lowe's/Home Depot. Most local retailers will hold your items until you tell them to deliver. Ask if there will be a promotional sale soon, like Easter or Memorial Day.

Abt delivers nationwide. We live in their local delivery and installation range (Chicago area) and love the store. We have bought many appliances from them and have always had great service. I guess if you had to do shipping with them, your contractor would have to handle the installation.

I always try to keep it local when possible and not use plastic for payment for those folks. Unfortunately I have my heart set on Bosch appliances and the local store doesn’t carry them. Has anyone dealt with Appliance Connection? They seem to be the only one that has all four items I need in stock. From the research I’ve seen, they get good marks. And yes delray, this is a full gut, new cabs, floors, countertops - the works. I should know by tomorrow when the cabs will ship, but at ordering time I was told approximately 6 weeks, which puts me in mid-April. Stay tuned for my lighting conundrum, but one thing at a time! :)

Agree, Abt. Bought all appliances for >2 homes from Abt. Very happy with products, customer service, and prices. Store is worth a trip for kitchen displays and fish tank.🐡🐟🐠

I went to Appliance Connection ( there is a showroom in Brooklyn) and they were very nice. I ordered from someone more local but would have been ok ordering from them.
