    Define "upgrade"?

Looking to replace cabinets, counters and appliances with something with a beach cottage or arts and crafts vibe. Functional yet compact within the existing layout aside from the cabinet to the right of the kitchen door.

Don’t know how we can help you, then. We need a budget, and other details...such as, will you be removing walls? Willing to alter the footprint? Replace the arched cabinets? Change appliance locations? Upgrade the appliances? Get rid of the ceiling fan, and improve the lighting?

From what I can see, your kitchen needs a lot of help. There are some awesome people here, with terrific design skills. But, even they need information to work with.

I think I'd get the microwave out of that spot. Remove those two cabs on that window wall. Instead, install a vertical column w pull outs , to the right of the brick column.....maybe 18 in wide . When you come in the back door and turn to the family room area you would have a clear walking path without the little cabs...or maybe just a 12 in deep bookcase under the window for cookbooks/etc. Did you want to replace everything around sink and stove??...go w deeper counters, dishwasher and drawers then....... Or, is all that staying??..and you want new counters/single sink..??? these are your TBD issues I guess.

I like the existing layout aside from the awkward area around the microwave. Yes to built in book case there. To the right of the door is an antique piece which works well but probably not there. I'd take out the existing cabinets and counters replace with new ones--white with butcher block counters- a very small narrow kitchen island. Have a designer and contractor in mind.
