Stained new wood floor!

My son spilled water on a piece of construction paper that was on the floor.

This happened 🤦🏽‍♀️.

Floor was newly stained/refinished with minwax stain and bona HD water based finish 2 weeks ago.

Not wiping off. Is this normal?

Yah... Colour transfer is normal from one material to another. If wet red craft paper would stain your fingers it will stain anything! It's not the floor picking up colour, it is the RED paper putting it DOWN.

Thankfully your flooring dude messed up your floors (adhesion failure = NEW floors!

Don't worry the FULL sand and refinish your dude owes you will fix this.

But next time you won't be so lucky. Remember: if it stains your fingers it can stain your floors.

SJ McCarthy - I must be missing something. What did the flooring "dude" do wrong? We will be getting hardwood in our new build. Have had it in many homes, but have never seen this happen. Our children are grown, but now we have grandchildren who like painting and crafts. I want to be prepared! :-)

Y G - What a shame! Reminds me of those science experiments with colored paper and the sun. Please let us know the outcome. BTW-What type of wood and color of stain did you use?

@nhb22 (how are you tagging people? I can't figure it out :) ).

I'm still so surprised this red stain from construction paper isn't coming off, it wasn't there for long . I really wonder if the water poly finish has anything to do with it .. traditionally, people used an oil based poly

We used : duraseal Jacobean , 3 coats of water based poly (bona traffic hd)

@User The OP has other issues. There is bond failure between the DuraSeal stain and the 3 coats of Bona Traffic HD. Things were done too quickly. The DuraSeal was not allowed to dry properly, then the Bona was put down too quickly and then the family was allowed back into the house too quickly.

The adhesion failure (Bona Traffic HD does NOT like oil stains like DuraSeal.....which tells me the 'dude' is NOT a Bona Certified Pro...'cause the certified pros do NOT do this!) means the OP is going to get a full sand and refinish.

Is it POSSIBLE the traffic is still 'soft' = easily 'upset' with stains??? Yes...absolutely. Is it possible the DuraSeal stain was so 'fresh' that it prevented the Bona from hardening...causing the floor to remain 'fresh' for too long???? Absolutely.

No matter what I write, it can be put back on the poor application of the WRONG products. And THAT'S what the dude did wrong.

Bona is FANTASTIC. It is also VERY finicky! It is so finicky it is SUPER easy to mess up. As in, one - two minutes of inattention and the refinisher has to stop and do it again. If they get it wrong by only a few minutes (Bona Traffic HD has a 5 minute wet edge....compared to 45 minutes of an oil based product!!!) they lose a day's worth of work.

I'm not kidding. Bona is amazing and tough and can be a life time of beauty....until your 'dude' (who you thought was a pro) messes it up. Like the OP's dude.
