Glossy wood-look tiles are hard to find. I'm going to guess matte is more what you will find for the next 3-5 years. And polished is VERY slick when a bit of water gets on it (think drops...not spills).

Matte floors alllllll the way. I see a ton of model homes, most matte unless they’re marble and sometimes that is shiny. But I couldn’t live in a house with shiny floors no way.

You do not want glossy floors in a busy space, they will show every footprint( think sweaty socks, ugh) every spill, just EVERYTHING! Shiny is gorgeous when freshly cleaned/ polished, but not practical.

@K R what brand and color flooring do you have? Love it. We're building a tract home and I'm really in love with Armstrong Scandia Rigid Core Midsummer Sun. yours reminds me of that.

while I like some of the wood-look tiles, I just think 10 years from now the saying will be, "hey 2015 called, and they want their wood look tiles back" .

Beth, I would have argued with you 3 years ago when I installed it but now I agree, it’s on its way out. In my new build I’m putting 24x48 matte porcelain tiles (not wood look). Very plain but neutral. I love my wood look tile and I think it compliments my current house, which is 2003 turned transitional, but for my new modern build I went totally different. I do believe the style of the house could dictate tile and as far as wood look tile goes, I absolutely love mine. It’s a workhorse tile and literally never looks dirty. Sometimes I have to convince myself to clean because weeks go by and I don’t see dirt. Lol

K R, I actually like yours. one of the few I see that I do like. Probably because of the plank sizes and the muted tones.

Thanks for all your input. I should clarify that my question was not choosing between a glossy or matte wood tile, rather I was choosing between a more plain large format glossy porcelain tile OR a matte wood look tile. I would not even consider a polished wood look as it would be about as far from the real thing as possible and a plain matte porcelain is what we have and it's time for a change! Currently I'm really leaning to a large format wood look tile. It is a very soft/subtle wood look almost stone look. The large format wood look is super popular in new construction and remodels here. I know wood look tile has been around for quite a while now but I have to disagree with you Beth and K R it is definitely not on it's way out! The showroom I'm shopping can not fill enough orders and is currently creating 2 new walls of large format wood look tiles. Remember wood floors have been in homes forever for good reason as it creates a warm comfortable space. You can plan on it for decades to come. In fact what you show as a more plain porcelain suggestion is what most people are having demo'ed out! Regardless I think ya gotta get what you love. For us Floridians any porcelain is an amazing durable choice with our high humidity, pools, and sun. Our style of home is slightly a contemporary Mediterranean, would not call it modern by any means. We could go either way just want to "modernize" it :) K R would love to see your porcelain choice. You might sway me the other way. lol. Sounds like you are pretty modern which the plain large format matte will look great. Looks so good in modern/mid century styles.

MaWizz, I like some of the styles. but the cheaper, faker look wood tiles just don't look good. A lot of them have a repeating pattern that ends up looking very busy once it's installed. And the shorter planks look very cheap. IMO.

If you can find a good porcelain tile that looks like wood, by all means. go for it. I'm only saying you're going to pay money to get that type of look.

and in Florida, terrazzo is the bomb! Tilebar has authentic terrazzo tiles. I'd be tempted to use those

Your absolutely right Beth. You get what you pay for, for sure! My hubby is gonna fall over when he finds out how much I'm spending. lol. Your second pic is where I'm at but the tiles are either 9x47 or 9x72. Yes, the design consultant I met with said the smaller tiles are out. I'm still think about those more plain large format tile. That's what the design consultant first showed me, but in glossy. I haven't ruled it out for the bathroom walls. That one came in 30x30 or 48x48. She didn't show me anything in matte. Terrazzo is so cool! Just saw it in a bath remodel in white cool tones. It is the bomb!

comes in this design. great for the bathroom. I like these warmer tones because grays and whites can look too cold and too sterile. So doing something in the warmer wood tones gives it a little depth.

I like that white terrazzo tile paired w/this Tilebar Klondike Yukon plank tile. It's 16x48"! so, minimal grout lines.

I'd love these last two tiles for a bathroom. maybe the black and white terrazzo just for some more contrast

This is what I’m doing in my new build, kinda mimics limestone but it’s very soft and super neutral. I’m all for large format anything these days. And of course being in hot and humid Florida porcelain tile is a must! Also I love the dog above! So cute!

Oh yes I did look at that first pic I actually have that saved in my photos! You are definitely talking my language with all these pics Beth! Yes agree to a bit of warmth as well, seeing that mix in model homes. I don’t mind some warmth. Our main room areas are painted greige. You are correct I do lean more modern, but I prefer to say contemporary cuz I don’t want to suggest my decorating style is cold. That’s a pretty shower idea. The bath is next if I can survive this floor reno. The last pic you posted I saved for shower floor!

That’s awesome K R I like your style. We are all white matte now and although it provides a nice basic palette for design it shows everything! I was hoping for a touch of color to take a little of the heat off me because I vacuum daily and mop once a week!

My question is since this would also run through my dining room would I still be able to pull off a contemporary dining set? And if so what do you think? I’m open to suggestions! I like something casual contemporary, comfortable (upholstered).

what about the planks on the right? I like those. the pattern doesn't seem to be as pronounced. People don't realize when looking at a few planks how prominent those patterns become once the entire room is done. If that's what you like, fine, but you will need more subtle furniture.

and yes. either one is suitable for your dining set.

yes i do like the planks on the right too, but we thought they leaned a bit more rustic as they have much more wood knotting and grain. i guess i was thinking neither one of these really had a prominent pattern and would be soft enough yet still give us a bit of color and a little more forgiving than than the plain white tiles we have??? hmmm??? and regarding dining furniture, I'll be getting new so open to suggestions that would work with these type of floors?

I"d wait until you have the floors installed. Or at least narrowed down to a choice.

as for design, it all depends on what you like . all sorts of contemporary styles. do you have anything in mind?

I love this last one. wouldn't exactly call it contemporary. more of a Calif Casual/boho type of design. But it's very clean and natural looking. Simply changing colors, lights, rugs, and you'd have a diff feel.
