Orchid Root Bugs

Hi! My Phal Orchid is looking ok, but I noticed some small spots on the roots and then - BUGS. Teeny tiny little silve ish white bugs. From what I can have googled they might be mealy bugs ugh. So, what do I do from here? Do I need to repot and clean the roots? if so is there a particular soil I should use or any suggestions? I've become attached to this plant - I hope it's ok!

Sorry about the pictures - I noticed it when it was getting watered in the sink. I panicked and posted as quickly as possible lol - that's also why I have a few typos 😳

Also, I'm in North Texas and the plant lives inside. I've had it three years - I water it weekly with a mild fertilizer. Every fourth week I do plain room temp water to flush it out. It has some blemishes because I have toddlers who throw food/have pulled on the plant leaves.

From your photos, I do not see mealy bugs or any other bug.

    Are you repotting this plant?

You have a Phalaenopsis orchid which looks healthy to my eyes. They have roots which are coated with a vellum which makes them appear like silver/white. That is normal.

Phals are not prone to mealies because they have thick leaves. Unless you have a close-up of a bug, I think you plant looks absolutely fine.

As a side note, the leaves are dark green which suggests it needs more light if you want to get flowers.

Jane_ny thank you for the info!! the plant does look healthy - I am going to keep an eye on it and see.
I am thinking that it might need repotting soon. I have had it 3 years now and I noticed there are less wood chips at the bottom.
I haven't moved it so I'm not sure why it has gotten so dark! We have had a ton of rain/clouds/snow this winter and spring - if it doesn't lighten up I'll move it closer to a window. I like it on the table because it's harder for my two year old to reach lol.
Thanks so much for replying! This group is always very helpful!

I agree, repotting is in order. Get it done now as it is Spring. Time of growth and health. Fertilize lightly, water when dry and definitely move it closer to the window or put outside in light shade. Outside offers so many benefits that is difficult to achieve indoors.

Remember, Phals need a temp drop in the fall to initiate flowering. So, if you can put it outside, leave it out until the night temps drop for two weeks.

Your plant looks good and I think repotting and moving outdoors for summer and fall will give you beautiful flowers during the winter.

Good luck and please let us know how things go.

Meyermike - I generally use room temp tap water - is that ok to use??

I notice some of the roots are stained which is a sign of salt damage from chemicals in tap and fertilizer. It will do ok. But much better if you use rain water. That’s what I use. But I wouldn’t worry about it if you don’t mind the roots looking fresh and white and green.
