There is a house near us with a similarly colored roof. I think it looks awful and totally dominates the structure. It is also pretty taste-specific. Metal roofs last a long time, so resale may be something to consider.

I agree with PP, it's limiting. normally I tell people to do what you love, but this roof is going to last for 40-70 years and might actually be a deal breaker to future homeowners.

your current home looks a million times better than the inspiration pic. if you actually need a new roof, a dark grey could look really good. (however note that the darker the color, the hotter your house will be.)

It also depends on the culture of the area. Where I live, it is very rural and colorful metal roofs are everywhere. So, no one would bat an eye at this.

Thank you all for your comments. I do love the look but it is taste specific and could affect resell down the road. Leaning now to taupe or gray. Need to come up with a new inspiration picture 😀

I love color and quirkiness and wine, but I think it just looks awful and it would be a deal breaker for me in terms of buying a house unless I was had the dough to rip it out, and I would ratchet down my bid accordingly.

If you don’t mind my saying, I think you need to trim down your front hedges drastically or get plants that more hug the ground. The columns of the porch need to be painted a contrasting color from your house body. For me, a house like yours needs a black, somewhat textured roof. If you want to go with metal panels, charcoal might work.

One more comment: No matter what you do with your roof, it will always be the most dominant design element of your house. It is just massive, and the rest of the detail of your house is rather recessive quiet. If you look at your inspiration photo with the burgundy roof, there is a lot of other stuff going on with that house, lots of it fairly in your face, and the roof is broken up into different elements.

For your house, you’ve got the roof balanced underneath by the wide open arms of the elongated porch. Right now you are partially amputating that big open space on the bottom by having the hedges make it seem more narrow and constricted. So that is why I suggest getting very low plantings so that you see the whole porch, and highlight the columns to give it punctuation.

I’d be concerned that if you put on a roof with a striped design, it becomes an even more dominant mass of eye-catching attraction, it will unbalance your house, even if you pick a more neutral color (the design of the paneling, the stripes, might be even more prominent in a lighter tone).

So I think you need to make the 2 elements of your house — the top and the bottom - come out even. Were that my house, I’d probably rip out the lawn and plant a field of Texas bluebells to really balance the big roof with dormers. And put red — or burgundy — old fashioned metal furniture on the porch!
