I guess it depends on what the space is like to have an accent wall that will be very expensive to have done right. As for who you need to contact some interior designers in your area to see who they use and be prepared to pay a fee to the designer. Or follow Jan advice.

I don't know about the Venetian plaster, I like real plaster walls. The kind that are thick and keep you warm. Or cool. And insulated from your neighbors.

Hey loobab, who even does real lathe and plaster anymore? I have a 1920s Colonial revival home with mostly original plaster walls. One of them buckled badly a few years ago and had to be totally removed. My contractor replaced it with drywall and I had it skimcoated. It looks great, but it's not the same as plaster :(

Here's another great thing about these marvelous old houses.

You know why you never get bathroom mold even though you never had fans in the bathrooms?

Because under the 50 layers of paint over the house's lifespan was the bad stuff, yessiree,

LEAD PAINT.

And lead is toxic to mold! All through those layers.

So now you know, although you probably did, why once you remodel and get lead abatement you need fans strong enough to dry your hair and loud enough so you can't even relax and enjoy your music and you have to leave them on a half hour after you get out and you need special anti-fungal paint and I even squirted in two extra tubes of anti-fungal gunk with a prayer .

And if you think you can do with your child with croup as was done in the old days, put them in the tub and turn on the water as hot as they can stand and shut the door and window and steam up the whole place for a few hours, forget it!

Or just know you will have as much paint peeling and spotting as you will have sweat dripping.

Just pull out your wallet.

Wow, I never found the old bathrooms to be free of moisture and condensation that can give rise to mold. Before I remodeled my bathrooms I had to wipe down the mirror before I used it. Now I have remote motor fans in the bathrooms and they work great! Fantech is the brand, and they are so quiet you don't know they're on, and I NEVER have any moisture or condensation after showering. I've recommended them to clients as well.

Oh, there was plenty of condensation, but never a drop of mold anywhere.
Of course, that was in pre- central air conditioning days, so windows were open everywhere with lots of cross ventilation.
We must have had a lot of of lead.
Thank goodness none of us had pica!
