That slanted wall is strange; I can't imagine it would be load-bearing, but you should have it checked. I'd put a side-loading pantry to the right of the fridge, since you don't seem to have pantry space. I like the island in the orientation you've drawn it. How high off the floor is the window in the family area? I don't think you need a table there, with the island and dining table so close.

I assume the family area is the main lounging and tv spot, and the living room is a smaller sitting area? I wouldn't use any of the space in the family area for a bench, second table or storage, so you have more flexibility for arranging your furniture. Open the kitchen to the dining room as mama goose has shown above. You may even have room for floor to ceiling pantry cabinets all along the short wall parallel to the table. And maybe room for a countertop height builtin unit behind the fireplace for use as a bar in the family room. Be sure to plan your furniture arrangement along with the structural changes.

Thank you both! I felt much better now that you have confirmed I should remove that wall - I will have my GC check it out for sure. And I really like the side-open pantry idea. I also plan to have cabinets on the back of fireplace, but more like bar-like cabinets, not floor to ceiling type. So even if I don’t put a table in front of the window, should I still build a bench or just leave it open? The window is the same height as the kitchen window.

I think you need a walk in pantry instead of the cabinets behind the fireplace.

Consider closing off the door to the family room and create a coat closet in that area

Thanks. That is definitely a good idea, if I can persuade DH on that.

I wouldn't plan to build a bench under the window until you have a full, exact floor plan with furniture to know if you have room for it or not, or whether it even makes sense in that location. You might rather have lower cabinets in that spot, or you might need the space clear as a walkway.
