question about lilacs

Hello!!


So, I was just cutting a sprig, when lo and behold, I saw it had these tiny purple things in some of the little leaf "elbows" - I forget what those are called - they couldn't be tiny buds, could they?


Did I cut my sprig too soon? What are these small purple things?
